The will of Mr Thomas Anstey Chave, formerly of Queensland, has been proved at under £117,000. The Bishop of Worcester, presiding at the Church Congress, said that the disestablishment of the Church in Wales would prove a blow at English national life and vitality. The Church, hosvever, would prove its enemies. Sir Arthur Blackwood, Secretary to the General Post ollice, tetato 61, is de.id. The Admiralty have decided to retain the Orlando on the Australian station, leaving the oiler to replace lier with a ship of ttie Astrea type open. Ihe Duke and Duchess of York have paid an official visit to Edinburgh. The occasion was kept as a high holiday, and the streets were filled with thousands of military and civilians. The Royal couple were laden with presents, and the free dom of the city was conferred on the Duke.
Owing to the action of the House of Lords rejecting the Home Rule' Bill, the Clan na-Gaei Society is being reorganised. Mr Patrick Egan and Mr Ford are also busily engaged in reviving secret societies in America.
News has been received that a whaler has reached 84deg. north. The Manchester Ship Canal wiil be opened on January Ist. It is proposed to hypnotise De Jough, the Dutchmau, accused of murdering Ins wife and other women. The press have a certaiued that there is nothing in the existing law to prohibit such procedure. The will of the late Mr Creyke, formerly of .New Zealand, has been proved at under £IO,OOO. Tlie whole of his New Zealand property goes to his wife. Mr Tom Mann, the labour leader, will shortly be ordained a deacon of the Anglican Church. The Siamese treaty is signed. BEttLIN, Oct. 4. It is reported that Prince Bismarck has sold his memoirs for £25,000, but they are not to be published till after his death. He is reported to be in a critical condition. Madrid, Oct. 2. News has been received that 5000 Moors attached the Spanish garrison, 300 strong, at Melilia, a seaport town on the north coast of Morocco, belonging to the Spaniards. The engagement lasted all day, and the Spanish were defeated with many killed. Arrangements are being made to despatch reinforcements from the Malaga province of Southern Spain. Oct. 4.
The fighting at Melilia arose through the Spaniards building a fort in the viciuity of an Arab cemetery. One hundred Spaniards were wounded. A truce is now declared. Capetown, Oct. 4.
A collision between the Matabele irnpi and the Chartered Company's forces is imminent.
Washington, Oct. 3. By a atorm at New Orleans 25 persons were killed and many injured. Oct. 4.
News from Brazil states that Congress has closed, and that anarchy is increasing in Rio. The provinces of Santa Oathariua and Parana have gone over to the rebels. Owing to the destruction of Rio by the rebel gunboats the commanders of the foreign warships have warned Admiral Mello to cease bombarding the forts or they will attack him. A cyclone swept over New Orleans and the orulf of Mexico. The damage is estimated at 1,500,000 dollars. Two hundred lives were lost. Calcutta, Oct. 4. Si- H. M. Durand, Envoy to Afghanistan, had a splendid military reception at Cabul, where he was installed in a new palace. The Ameer offered the representatives of the Indian Government many gracious and lavish attentions. Oct. 5. Colonel Wissman, the German leader, defeated 5000 Arabs near Lake Tanganyka with great slaughter, and liberated a hundred slaves. New York, Oct. 4. The match between the Australians and eighteen of New York began yesterday: The Home team batted first, and made 100. Trumble took 100 wickets for 41, and McLeod 3 wick.eta for 44. The Australians in their first innings have lost 2 wickets for 33.

Mr Merriman was lately very ill, and during his absence his books were examined and the deficiency discovered. 'J he German sailor, Stenzol, who stabbed another in a row, was found guilty of manslaughter, and removed for senteuce. A Proclamation has been issued, declaring the new electoral law to be in force. The new rolh are to be completed by January 30th. The Mayor reported Merriuian'a suspension to s the City Council to-day, and said that he had confessed to misappropriating £3,800. In the Legislative Assembly the division on the Adult Suffrage Bill was 24 in favour of the measure and 23 against. As an absolute majority is necessary before a change in the constitution can be adopted, the Bill will not be proceeded with. Brisbane, Oct. 5. The Minister of Lands expects to have everything ready by the end of next week, for the people to go on laud in co-operative communities. The Postmaoter- General reports that the reduction of the postage rates between Queensland and Great Britain has resulted in a loss amounting to nearly £SOOO per annum. Three of the men accused of stealing gold from the Mount Morgan mine have been committed for trial. It is rumoured that the police are in possession of thirty names, including the name of a person in a high position, whose arrest is expected hourly. Hobart, Oct. 5.
The House of Assembly has reduced the salaries of the President of the Council and Speaker of the House from £4OO to £250. A proposal to reduce payment of members from £SO to 5s was rejected by 14 to 12. A proposal to reduce the salary of the Agent- General was also negatived.
