LATE CALEDONIAN BALL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — As a director of the Temuka Caledonian Society I shall be glad of a brief space in your paper to express a few of my sentiments with regard to the late ball. It was I consider in every respect a fitting finish to a very social winter. The rooms were most beautifully decorated, and reflected the greatest praise upon Mr T. Gunnion, whose taste in this respect is certainly undeniable. The attendance I remarked was good, and the popularity of the society was evinced by the numbers present from Timaru and elsewhere. Words are too feeble to express one’s admiration of the fair sex assembled. They were, in their charming costumes, a parterre of flowers, amongst whom some of the ladies of Arowhenua and Timaru bloomed in radiant effulgence. My brother directors also, I was glad to see, had a due appreciation of their duties, and lent every aid in their power to make the evening prove enjoyable. Our worthy chief was, as usual, not merely a host, but a host in himself, and it was with regret I noticed that his illness caused him to leave us early. Last, but not the least, let me mention the supper, which was thoroughly well appointed, and a credit to Mr and Mrs Tombs, whose resources in this respect appear inexhaustible. I trust that the successful ball is a prelude to an unusually successful sports gathering.—l am, etc., Terpsichore.
