TEMUKA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
The. annual meeting of the above Society was held on Thursday evening last, at the Temuka Hotel. There was a good attendance, and Mr A. M. Clark, the President, occupied the chair. The minutes of the previous annual meeting having been confirmed, the President submitted a brief report, in the course of which he congratulated the society upon having the very satisfactory balance of £122 to their credit. During the year they had given donations to the High School, Mechanics' Institute, and the Queensland Relief Fund, and as their position became more assured they would be enabled to extend their sphere of operations in this respect. The society was increasing in popularity, the number of members upon the roll being 99, as against 88 last year. He trusted there would be a steady increase. Regret was expressed at the loss, by death, of Messrs C. Bisset and A. G. Cox, two members who had always assisted the society to the utmost of their power. He congratulated the secretary upon his restoration to health and referred in eulogistic terms to his services during his term of office. The rules of the society required revision. They were based upon rules in existence elsewhere when the society started, but they were not now as good as they might be. It was suggested that they be revised. Referring to the balance-sheet he might say that their total receipts, including a balance from last year of £7213s were £433 Os Bd, of which £49 10s was derived from members' sub&criptions,£2o6 9s from sports (entrance money, booth, gate money, etc.) and £49 5s from the concert. The social receipts were £2O 2s, and from the ball £29 9s, interest and sundries amounted to £4 0s 6d. The expenditure amounted to £3ll 0s 4d. Of this the sports expenses totalled £lß2los. the concert £3O 14s 4d, socials £3O 12s sd, ball £32 14s 4d, bonus to late secretary £2O, donations £7 7s, and sundries £7 2s 3d. The profit for the year was £3112s 2d. In conclusion he begged to move the adoption of the report and balance-sheet as read.
The motion was seconded by Mr Blyth and carried unanimously.
The president, before leaving the chair, thanked the members most cordially for the support, courtesy, and kindness extended to him during his term of office. While he could take credit of initiating the society, yet it was only their loyal support that had made it a success. He hoped they would appoint officers who would take interest in the society, but would be glad to be absolved from office himself. In connection with the affairs of the society he would say that he would be pleased if heads of families would take more interest in their social gatherings. They were promoted for the general good of the society, and members should support them. The president then vacated the chair, which was taken by Mr Archer, the secretary. Mr Twomey in a brief but eulogistic speech moved that Mr A. M. Clark be re-elected president of the society. He said that he was really the central point upon which the society was hinged. He had since the inauguration of the society displayed a wonderful amount of energy and said that it was mainly thro ugh his influence that it had proved such a success. The general committee had done much, but to their president was mainly due the prestige the society had gained, and in moving his re-election he felt sure that he was actiug in accordance with the wishes of the members generally. Mr Clark had seen the society through its infantile stages and he (the speaker) felt sure that he would not desert it now.
Mr Twomey's motion was carried unanimously, and Mr Clark returned thanks. In the course of hia speech he referred to previous services of the directorate, and expressed a hope that the officials of the future would co-operate as, well as they had done in the past, The election of offioera was then proceeded with, and the following committee were elected, viz., Messrs Henry, Murray, Campbell, Angland, Lawson, Naughton, W. McLeod, J. Marshall, Blyth, Scannell, D. Taylor, A.. Jenkins, T. Rooney, J. Sim, M. Quinn, J. McCaskill, G. McMillan, D. Ferguson, and J, MeLean. GENERAL, On the motion of Mr Murray, it was resolved—" That Messrs Henry, Blyth, Scott, Scannell, and Ferguson be appointed a sub-committee to revise rules." Mr Ferguson moved the election of Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, M.H.R., as patron., and the the motion was carried unanimously.
VOTES OF THANKS, E.TO
Votes of thanks were passed to the retiring officials, and special mention was made of thejservices of Mr Mabin, the honorary piper of the society. At a meeting of directors subsequently held Messrs Henry and Blyth were elected vice-presidents.
