TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above was held last night. Present —Messrs J. Blyth (chairman), P. Coira, W. Storey, J. W. Miles, and G. Mason. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read as follows : From the Timaru Harbour Board office, notifying that the advance by shingle since last memo, had been 50 feet, and a request was made that the plan previously sent be returned for re-marking,—The clerk had attended to same. From Messrs Wise & Co., asking the clerk to notify alterations iu the valuation, etc., for publication in Canterbury Directory. overseer’s report. The overseer’s report was to the following effect: —He had examined the pipe drain iu Vino Street, as requested, and considered the pipes had not been laid at proper level. He also found a faulty pipe in the reserve occupied by Mr Coira. He had had some temporary repairs done to same, and suggested that a portion should he taken up and relaid, and, owing to the heavy flooding occassionally on bot h sides of Vine Street, he deemed it advisable that the outlet of the drain be left open, otherwise Mr Cojra'9 reserve was always liable to bo flooded. He d re W attention tft overhanging trpes and unput fences. They were very objectionable and interfered with the surfaceman's work, He asked for instructions as to whether residents wore to be allowed to tip manure, etc., on roads before wheeling same into sections. He also desired to know if anything should be done with storekeepers, who swept rubbish from their premises into the water tables. As Inspector under Board of Health, he reported on thq drains. —It was agreed to inspect same.
THE WEILS. Mr Coira drew attention to the fire brigade wells, and suggested that they should be again tested. He thought that considering the position of the brigade’s finances, the board should grant that body a small amount to cover the cost. The chairman stated that from a conversation he had had with the captain of the brigade, he understood that it would cost about £7 10s. He thought the expense justifiable, as the maintenance of the water supply meant a considerable item to those insuring. As it stood at present, while the brigade was in existence every insurer received a discount of 25 per cent, Mr G. Mason concurred with the chairman’s remarks and moved—“ That the sum of £7 10s be granted to the Fire Brigade for the purpose of testing the wells, and that the captain of the brigade be asked to report upon their efficiency.’ ’ —Carried. WATER-TABLES. Mr Mason drew attention to the condition of the water-tables. He noticed that some had been cleaned to such a depth that stagnant water accumulated. The chairman suggested that members of the board inspect the main outlet drain, which he believed afforded insufficient drainage at present, and it was agreed that the members should do so this afternoon in company with the overseer. A COMPLAINT. Attention was drawn to a case where a householder had staked and utilised gorse for small buildings close to au adjoining occupier’s house. The board thought such a practice repreaensible, and decided to take further steps to s|op it. ASPHALTING, BTC. Mr Storey mentioned the matter of the asphalting of the footpath from the south corner of High street to the railway crossing, and also from Eweu road to Godley street, west of Main South road, and gave notice of motion that at next meeting the whole matter of asphalting be considered. On the recommendation of Mr Storey it was decided that the footpath near Mr Bateman’s residence in Davey Street be raised. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £24 Is lOd were passed for payment.
