At Auckland on Monday, before Mr justice Conolly, one of the grand jurymen complained that he had been several times approached to use his influence in certain cases. The judge said if the persons were named, they would be dealt with severely. The grand jury found no true bill in the case of John Moit, charged with carnally knowing a girl under 12. Leopold Auckland Christian, for larceny as a bailee, was sentenced to two years; Tiko Awakino, for larceny, to 12 months ; and Richard .Kennedy, for arson at Mercury Bay, to three years, Margaret Turner, a servant, was sentenced to twelvemonths, for stealing a silver plate from her employer. , At Wellington on Monday before the Chief Justice, John Reginald, alias Crawford, three charges, passing valueless cheques, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three years' hard labor. William Walker,at present undergoing three years' imprisonment for breaking and entering, pleaded guilty to a similar offence and was remanded for sentence. D. McDonald, on a charge of being on the pre mises of the National Hotel, Wellington, with felonious intent; and F. G. Eraser, for larceny of jewellery belonging to Ada Bond, were founii not guilty. Qn Tuesday, the Crown Prosecutor entered a nolle prosequi against Captain Baldwin, who stood committed for arson on a Coroner's warrant. It was explained that the Repjdpjit Magistrate had dismissed, the case, and there "was no fresh evidence. Captain Baldwin, however, demanded a jury, and one was accordingly empannelled and formally acquitted him of the charge.—Robert Johns was found guilty of assaulting and robbing John McLeod at Martinboro', and lyas remanded for sentence! The afternoon was occupied in hearing the charge preferred against Berdaiid Hansen, a youth of 15 years of age, of bjvviiig QomuiitJed rjipp on a little gill at Woodville. Tho Coiirt adjourned at 6.30 until 8 o'clock, The o.ise was expected to last some time. At Dunedin on Tuesday, James Craik was found guilty of assault with intent, under great provocation, and sentence was deferiod. William McPhee and Henry Holland, convicted on Monday of housebreaking, were brought up for sentence. MePh'ee, an pld oJibnder, rpceiyed three years, and Hplland twelve' months.
