1.0.G.T., TEMUKA.

Another open lodge social was given by the members of the Good Hope Lodge on Tuesday evening, which proved a great success. We understand several had to be refused admission through want of room, and many had to stand the whole time for the same reason. After the lodge had been duly opened and closed by Bro. Whitehead, C.T., the was opened for the public, who soon filled it to overflowing. A very good programme had been arranged by the entertainment committee, and was at once proceeded with, Bro. Whitehead acting as chairman. The first item on the programme was a glee by the Lodge Choir, which was capitally given, the voices blending splendidly. A reading by Bro. Levens, entitled " The Bashful Man," amused the audience very much. A song by Sister M. Goodey was much applauded, and a recitation by Bro. Watts showed him to be a reciter above the average. A song by Sister Taylor, " Mary of Argyle," was much admired. Sister Taylor has a very rich, sweet voice, and excels iu rendering Scotch songs. Bro. Whitehead next sang " The Weepiug Willow," but before he began he asked the audience to join in the chorus. This was simply impossible to most of them, especially the ladies, aB the singer with his rich, deep, bass voice, went about seven fathoms below the floor of the building. Mr George Barrett, who was asked to fill a vacancy in the programme and kindly consented to do so, followed with a song, and was heartily applauded. A glee by the choir brought the first part of the programme to a close, when, refreshments were handed round, the catering for which was done by Mr J. McCaskill, which is a sufficient guarantee of their quality. After the refreshments the second part of the programme was gone on with as under : Glee, choir; recitation, Sister Cruickshank ; song, Bro. Whitehead ; reading, Bro, CJouston. [Presentation of prizes were then made to Sjsfer Mary McLpod and Bro. Cassidy won at sewing and darning competition]. Song, Bro. Mouahau ; recitation, Bro. Watts; song, Mr G, Collins, Mr Russell made a few remarks on the political stage of the temperance question, and moved the following resolution, which was seconded, and carried unanimously : —" That while this meeting views with gratitude and approbation the noble stand taken by Sir Robert Stout and his supporters in endeavoring to give the people control of the liquor traffic, it views with alarm the Bill now before the House brought iu by the Premier, as antagonistic to true Decracy and retrogade in principle, and that this meeting demand the right of the people to deoide on the control of the traffic by a simple majority." The whole concluded Jwith a dialogue, or domestic drama, entitled " Mrs Wetter's Resolve," the characters for winch were sustained by the following members : Robert Wetter, Bro. Watts; Job Smile?, Bro. J. Blythj Mr McQuid (a packman), Bro. Levens; Tammy Wetter (a larrikin), Bro. W. .Blyth ; Phelim O'Grady (a policeman), Bro. Mercier; Mrs Wetter, Sister M.
