London, August 20,

It is reported that a serious conflict has taken place between the strikers and workers at Dowlass a great iron centre near Methyr-Tydvil, where 10,000 men are engaged. Special trains filled with soldiers are being hurried down to Wales, Business is,stopped in the disturbed districts. Steam oal has risen to 30s per ton.

Stones were placed on the Rhondda railway, but were discovered in time to prevent a disaster. The strikers at Dowlass attacked the men at work. The weapons used were chiefly staves. The Riot Act was read and the military were called out. The soldiers put an end to the riot, but not till many were injured. Batteries of artillery occupy the public buildings. The employers have issued a manifesto, statiug that unless the men return and adhere to the scale fixed, they will insist on the penalties. Mr W. Abraham, a miners’ representative in the House of Commons, has ap- ! pealed to the strikers to return, August 21, The Welsh strikers pillaged the bakeries at Ferndale last night. The police charged the rioters at Pontypridd several times, and many of the former were injured. August 22.

The miners in Ebbwvale (Monmouthshire) are working on the sliding scale, and the neighboring valleys desire to imitate this course. The presence of the military and the energy of the magistrates prevented the proposed attack on the workers at Ebbwvale yesterday. In consequence of the riots at Nismes the French Press urge that a rigorous tax should be imposed on employers of foreigners. The French Government will compensate the families of the Italians killed in the southern riots.

A mob made a hostile demonstration outside the French Embassy in consequence of the attack on the Italian laborers near Nismes in which large numbers of the labourers were killed. Stones were thrown and hooting indulged in. The anti-French demonstration has been renewed in Rome and other cities, owing to the massacre of the Italian labourers at Nismes. There is an excited feeling throughout Italy. August 22,

The Italian Government have suspended the Prefect of Rome and the Chief of the Police for failing to protect the French Embassy properly. The Italians renewed their agitation against the French Ambassadors to the King and the Pope. The attempt was frustrated by soldiers. The rioters have wrecked and burned the French tram cars in Genoa, and .chased the officials. Further attacks have been made on the French Embassy in this city, and windows were smashed. The police were powerless to quell the disturbance, and troops had to be called out to disperse the mob. San Francisco, August 21.

The unemployed at San Joaquim, i n California, turned 800 Chinamen out of the vineyards. Several Chinamen were killed, and when the Sheriffs attempted to stop the fight, the mob turned' on them and defeated them.

Christchurch, August 21. Fourteen of the unemployed left by the Wakatu to-night for the works at Cheviot. Seven of the men came from Oamaru. Others were from Christchurch.
