HINDOO-MAHOMMEDAN RIOTS.

Bombay, August 13,

The riots in Bombay were caused by the actiou of Mahonimedans iucensed at the noisiness of the Hindoo festival, They stormed the temple, and the religious discord between the two sects was at once inflamed into bitter strife. All traffic is now suspended. The bitterness between the Hindoos and Mahommedans is intensified by this outbreak. The troops were obliged to fire upon and charge the rioters. Collisions were frequent in several parts of the city. Three hundred armed policemen and railway hands are assisting the troops. Two hundred rioters, have been taken prisoners. Lord Harris returns immediately. August 14.

Two thousand of those engaged in the Hindoo-Mahommedan riots have been arrested, Fifty of the rioters have been killed and the hospitals are filled to overflowing ' with wounded. The burial parties were attacked by rioters, and. tW services of the military had t,Q be called into requisition to protect them. Further reinforcement have arrived, and the native journals urge the people to remain calm.

August 15.

There is but little disturbance to-day, and matters are quieting down. The shops are reopening. With the exception of the mosques and temples very little damage has been done in the city by the rioters.

The Queen has wired to Lord Hwr|a } expressieg her grief at the i;o,ta in Bombay.
