DIRECT VETO.
TO THB EDITOR
Sir, —Having retreated from the seat of war into tha country, I did not receive your valuable paper for nearly a fortnight. But when I did what news I saw was that 1 had been promoted to a firm of Messrs McKenzie, Hammond & Co. N ow, sir, this has given me fresh courage, and, health permitting, I shall enter into the conflict again on Tuesday, the 15th, at Woodbury. I shall bo glad to make Mr Resident's acquaintance, and give him a seat on the platform, as it seems a pity that a man with such eloquence as " mean, lying devices " should be confined to a short letter in a paper. Now, sir, I hope " Resident" will not be away from home this time, but will attend and see what Mr Hammond is afraid to acknowledge. No doubt his friends will give him something to keep out the cold. Robert Hammond, Of the Firm of McKenzie, Hammond & Co.
