Accident.— Mr John Lawson, poundkeeper, Temuka, met with a nasty accident yesterday. He was at Orari, and meeting with two horses on the road which he was told belonged to Mr Mason, storekeeper, he drove them to the store, and they went into the yard, where he met Mr Mason, who was leading another horse by the bridle. As Mr Mason passed Mr Lawson, Mi Mason’s horse kicked, and struck Mr Lawson on the shin, inflicting a nasty cut. Mr Lawson rode into Temuka and got the wound stitched up by Sir William Blunden, and he is by latest accounts progressing favorably. Thirty thousand acres belonging to the Hesperia Land and Water Company of Los Angelos, California, were sold to an English syndicate for £750,000 The land is situated in San Bornandino County, and is irrigated by water pipes, from the sources of the Mogaval river, several miles distant. Mr Williams, Liberal Unionist, said in the House of Commons on June sth that he considered £2OOO for the sake of Sir Charles Russell’s service for a week as counsel for Great Britain before the Behring Straits Commission was too much, and gave uotice’of motion to reduce the amount.
