London, July 20. The Miners’ Federation by 4 to 1 refused to accede to the proposed reduction in wages and declined to submit the matter to arbitration. It was resolved that a reply be sent 'declining to accept the terms of the colliery owners. The Miners’ Federation have resolved to expel all districts not accepting their decisions respecting the proposed reduction in wages, and have called out the whole of the miners. July 22. Abundant stocks of coal strengthen the employers’ attitude towards the men. Mr Piokhard, on behalf of the miners, has declined to submit the difference to arbitration. New York, July 22. Thirty-thousand smelters and silverminers are idle in Colorado. Sydney, July 22. There is great distress among the northern colliers, and the various lodges propose to levy from those in employment to assist those out of work. Brisbane, July 22, It is expected that a Bill will shortly be introduced to establish labor settlements to relieve the unemployed. Christchurch, July 22. A largely attended meeting was hela last night to consider the unemployed question. The Mayor was in the chair. It was resolved to call upon the Government to place a sum of £20,000 upon the estimates to reclaim Lake Ellesmere lands, as the Minister for Lands had admitted that 24,000 acres could be profitably reclaimed. It was also resolved to call upon the Government to subsidee the local bodies in order that they might start; also that in the event of the Government refusing to subsidise the local bodies, they be reminded that the same power that created can uucreate. There was some dissent to the last motion.
