London, July 18. The Times says that the experiments on a largo scale in Australia, towards a solution the labour problem have done the world a great service. Miss Shaw, travelling correspondent of the Times, in reviewing the four great strikes in Australia, emphasises the limitation of unionism, and states that prominent Labour leaders, speaking of the maritime strike, assured her that the day of strikes was over, and predicted a general decline. The London County Council has withdrawn the fair wages clause in all its contracts. Sydney, July 20. It has now been ascertained that the unexploded cartridge found among the coal on board the steamer Burrurabeet at Newcastle, did not contain dynamite as at first alleged.
The Premier replying to the Mayor of HunediiJs telegram re the unemployed, sa y S : “ The present expenditure on public works being beyond the limit governing opr proposed expenditure for the year, at a tirpe such as this, and during the winter months, the local bodies and private enterprise should if possible come to the rescue. The Government are doing their level best, but cannot and should not be expected to do that which is impossible.” The Minister for Labor has made provision for fifteen men going from Christchurch to Cheviot on in, addition to the fiftoep for whom he provided work at Bltham.
