Sydney, July 14. The seamen, through the clerk of awards, proposed to refer their dispute to arbitration. The owners in reply declined to arbitrate with a body of men whom they declared wanted only broken agreements. A number of seamen have been fined nominal sums for refusing duty. A tremendous sensation has been caused at Newcastle by an attempt to destroy the steamers Sydney and Burrumbee by means of dynamite Yesterday the firemen of both vessels found dynamite cartridges in the stokehole with a burning fuse attached. The Sydney’s firemen placed the cartridge in a bucket of water, but it exploded, smashing the bucket to atoms. No damage was done to the vessel. On board the Burrumbee the cartridge was extinguished, and prevented from exploding. The Government offer £250 reward in each case for the discovery of the culprits. July 15. The Seamen’s Union disclaim any connection with the dynamite outrage at Newcastle. The officials connected with both companies treat the matter ligh ly. The vessels in which the cartridges were found were manned by non-unionist crews. Christchurch, July 15. The Executive of Amalgamated Railway Servants want the conference of railway men at Wellington postponed, as they object to the way the delegates have been elected. As the Railway Commissioners refused to agree to a postponement, it was decided to protest against

the conference, unless the delegates were elected by the employees generally.
