Ottawa, July 9. Thirteen thousand Catholics in Montreal attempted to demolish the rotuuda of the Protestant missionaries, owing to the latter stigmatising them as idolators. Information, however, was sent beforehand to the authorities aud a body of police and riflemen were on guard. Many of the rioters were injured and a number arrested. New York, July 10. A storm ou Lake Mighjgan paused the destruction of a number of boats, and damaged a portion of the Chicago Exhibition building. The Government will short submit to the House a Bill for tho imposition of an Income Tax. It will provide for a minimum of 3d ju the £, and a maximum

of Bd, charged on incomes derived from personal exertions, exceptions being made in the case of incomes under £2OO. A tax of Is in the £ will be imposed on incomes received from investment. It is estimated that this tax will yield £300,000 per annum, thus obviating the necessity for the imposition of a land tax on unimproved values, or a small duty on goods now admitted free into the colony. Through a crane breaking, two men, named Delia and P.ncole, were precipated a hundred feet from the top of a new building and killed. The bodies were fearfully mangled. A third man, named Masson, is badly injured, and lies in a critical condition. Sir Michael Davies was formally committed for trial to-day. Brisbane, July 11.
