ARBOR DAY.
A meeting of representatives of the Temuka and Arowhenua Town Boards, the Temuka Road Board, and of the School Committee was held at the Temuka Town Board office on Tuesday afternoon. There were present Messrs Jas. Blyth, P. Coira, D. Taylor, E. Brown, C. Bates, G. Levons, J. W. Salmond, G. Mason, and W. Storey. Mr Jas. Blyth was voted to the chair, and in the course of his opening remarks referred to the interest that appeared to be takeu in other places in the celebration of Arbor Day, The present meeting had been convoned with a view of ascertaining if there was any desire to celebrate the day locally, and to discuss the most desirable way of doing so. A conversational discussion took place upon the sr.bjeot. It was urgod that it would be diillcult to find a suitable place for planting, and further that there would be considerable expense attached to any course adopted. Tho more sanguine thought a certain amount of funds could be raised, and that either tho Tomuka or Arowhonua Town Boards could provide a reserve that could be planted to advantage-, and further that the celebration of the day should be regarded from a national, and not a purely local point of view. Ultimatoly, on tho motion of Mr Coira, it was resolved —" That, those present be appointed a provisional committee, with power to add to thoir number, to ascertain what support the ' movement was likely to receive from tho general public, and report to a meeting to be held on Wednesday, July 19th." Mr E. Pilbrow was appointed secretary, and the committee were empowered to employ a canvasser, and lix remuuerafttiou,
Apologies for non-attendance were made on behalf of Messrs Talbot, Ashwoll, Russell, Carr, and McCaskill.
A meeting to consider tho question of tree-plantiug on Arbor Day will be held in the Town Board offices, Goraldine, <m Monday evening next, at 7.30. The meeting should have been held last Monday evening, but owing to the Board neglecting to advertise it the meeting lapsed. The question is an important one for the district, and we hope to see a large attendance at the meeting.
