The overseer reported : —“ The works on hand made good progress .during the early part of the month, but the heavy rain of the past few has stopped shingle-carting for the present. I have deferred calling tenders for the work on the Boundary road and Fifield’s road, as the ground is too soft for shingle carting to advantage as directed, I have inspected the drains complained of on Gould’s and Middlemiss’s roads, Waihi Flat. I found very litte water in the drain on Gould’s and some places none at all, but the drain requires cleaning to let the water away freely after heavy rains. On Middlemiss’s road the drain is blocked with live and dead gorse, and the portion used as a water-race by the Council is very foul. This requires cleaning from end to end before the water can get away. Nothing, however, can be done until the gorse is cleared, notice for which has been given. Repairs —The day men have been employed iu effecting shingle repairs to the Pleasant Valley, Orari Station, and roads in the Belfield V.S. further repairs will be required in the Boundary, Shaw’s, and the Geraidine roads. Fords, etc.—The late heavy rains have caused floods in all the rivers. The whole of the fords and crossings have been scoured out, and will require fixing, but no serious damages has been done. Poisoned wheat A supply of poisoned wheat has been forwarded by the County Council; a good quantity has been issued to farmers during the past two weeks. The Council have also been d’stributing wheat in a portion of the district on the roads, but were driven off by the severe weather at the latter end of the week.” —I have, etc., “ Wm. Shiebs, Overseer.” GORSE. The chairman, on behalf of Mr M, 0. Orbell, lodged a complaint against a person at Hilton for not keeping his gorse clear, and it was resolved to take legal proceedings against the party in question. The chairman thought that the board should commence in some systematic manner to compel the owners to clear their gorse, and summonses should be issued whenever necessary. Mr Brophy thought that one notice to clear gorse was quite sufficient for anyone. Accounts amounting to £lB7 16s 6d were passed tor payment. The board then rose.
