DAIRY PRODUCE TRADE.
At the Dairying Association annual meeting at Dunedin the shareholders carried these resolutions :—That the export trade of dairy produce can only be properly developed under the factory system; that all factory producers and companies be urged to co-operate with the Association ; that in the event of margarine or other imitation butter being manufactured in the colony it be sold only in its natural color of lard and not in a colorable imitation of butter; that the manufacture for export or otherwise of anything but full milk cheese be discouraged in every way ; that the shipping companies be requested to reduce the freight on butter and cheese in cool freezing chambers to £d per pound gross weight; that the shipping companies or Government should place thermographs in all the cool chambers; that the Government or the Railway Commissioners should erect cool stores at ports of shipment ; that the Government should erect or lease a New Zealand produce cool store at the London docks, where all goods should be classified and preserved until disposed of as the shippers may direct; that a Committee be appointed to consider the Dairies Act and suggest amendments and improvements (Messrs Stevenson, Brydone, Cuddie, Birch, Pryde, Cushnie, and George were appointed the committee) ; that the Railway Commissioners should, in the interests of settlement, be again requested to reduce rates and give facilities for the cheap carriage of dairy produce, so that the dairy industry may be largely extended ; that farmers should take an interest in the improvement of the breed of dairy cattle, and that all pure-bred cattle should be entered in the “New Zealand Herd Book”; that the time has now arrived when the Government should be asked to fix the weight of a gallon of milk at 111 b avordupois. Mr Brydone expressed the opinion that the Dairy Industry Act is not practicable. The name of the Association Was changed to the National Dairy Association of New Zealand. It was decided to accept a 25 guinea cup offered by Messrs Nairn and Company, of Glasgow, for competition among dairy factories, and to ask the Agricultural and Pastoral Association to carry out the competition at the annual show or later. A motion was proposed, recording the Association’s high appreciation of the efforts of the Government and Agent-General to foster and encourage the dairy industry. It was left to the committee to decide the next place of pjeeting according to the support received in itfee north.
