HILTON.
On Wednesday evening last, a farewell social was held to bid good bye to Mr and Mrs P. Ryan, who have sold their farm and are leaving the district. There was a capital attendance. Messrs R. Skinner and K. Brophy sent apologies for non-attendance. After full justice had been done to a sumptuous repast provided byMrJ. McCaskill, Temuka, Mr James Mailer, the chairman, said he had great pleasure in being there on the occasion to do honor to Mr and Mrs Ryan, whom he had known for a number of years, and all he had known of both was to their utmost credit. He would •not detain them but would ask some other gentleman to fill in what he left out. Mr Dalton spoke at some length dwelling on the good qualities of their guest, whom he had known for some few years. He was glad that he (Mr Ryan) was not compelled to leave, but was going to retire on a well earned competency for the rest of his days. Messrs J. Skinner and Buckley also made short speeches eulogising the guest of the evening. Mr Ryan, on behalf of Mrs Ryan and himself, thanked them for their good wishes. He was, in a manner, sorry to leave so many old friends, but he was getting tired of farming, and was not quite so ambitious as some of his friends, who needed thousands before they would retire. B e was glad to say he had enough to keep his wife and himself) comfortably for the rest of their days, and should any of his friends call on him in Christchurch he would accomodate them as well as possible. Being a poor speaker they would excuse him from making along speech, aud he would conclude by again thanking them cordially. During the evening songs wore snug by Messrs Me Caskill, Hale, Dalton, Johnston, Campbell, and Misses Gregan, and Miss Bradley. All the songs were splendidly rendered and encored in nearly every instance. The younger people present kept dancing going until the wee sma’ hours and thus ended one of the most enjoyable meetings held in Hilton.
