THE WORKERS’ UNION.

TO THE EDITOR. Sik, —In answer to Mr E. Burke’s letter of the 27th inst., it has taken him a long time to oouooot a reply to Mr Hammond and his mate. It is a mystery that he could allow his feelings to lie dormant for so long a time. Since the forming of the General Workers Union a few months ago I am not aware of one single instance where the union or unionman has clashed with the farmers. Whatever difficulties arose, it has been with machine-owners. There has not been much difficulty in coming to satisfactory terms with them—at least it has been settled without controversy through the public Press, I trust Mr Burke will no longer attempt to lose time in correspondence against Mr Hammond and his mate. I think strict attention to his farm duties would pay him bettor. I would like to mention tha union is not a concern that wishes to be continually having controversy, or to be in antagonism to employers of labor. Our objects are these: to protect the rights of shearers and laborers throughout New Zealand; to secure and maintain a fair rate of remuneration by the adoption of prices and rates of wages suitable to the circumstances of the several districts; the adoption and enforcement of just and equitable agreements between employers and employees, and to ensure tfye oqrryiur' out of the same. Trqsftpg, Editor, th**t you v/j.ll insert this on behalf of the laboring men, I am, etc., Mr Hammond’s Mate. Temuka, June 29th, 1893.
