THE VOLUNTEERS

From a telegram which reached us late last night we learn that Colonel Fox has in his long expected report recommended that the Temuka, Geraldine, Ashburton, and Waimate Rifles, and the Timaru Battery of Artillery should be disbanded. No doubt this would suit Colonel Fox, as it would save him a good deal of trouble, but we doubt very much whether the people will put up with this. Other country districts will be similarly dealt with, and the Government will find the pressure so strong that they will carry out the recommendations. It is simply madness to abolish country corps and allow city corps to exsit. Men accustomed to country life will undergo ten times as much fatigue as townsmen, and if ever called upon can do better work.
