TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Temuka School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Present Messrs Salmond (chairman), Bates, Levens, Hooper, Taylor, Russell, P. McCaskill, and Grant. Mr J. W. Miles sent an apology for absence. inspector’s repoet. The inspector’s report upon the school •pas read. It was of a satisfactory Character. HEAD MASTER’S REPORT. The head master’s report was as follows : “ The Chairman Temuka District High School Committee. “ Dear Sir, I have the honor to submit my monthly report re the above school. The average attendance has been : Boys, 158.5 ; girls, 126.5 ; total, 285. The annual examination of pupil teachers begins on Tuesday, 27th ;it will therefore be necessary for the committee, to consider the matter of the mid-winter holidays. I herewith forward a cheque for thirteen pounds (£l3), the net proceeds of the late concert. 1 also desire to record the hearty support given to me by the whole of the staff in the getting up and carrying out the concert.—l have the honor, etc,, “ D. Ferguson, “ Head Master.” On the motion of Mr Levens, seconded by Mr P. McCaskill, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the head master and staff for the manner in which they had worked up the concert, and made it such a financial success. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Russell, seconded by Mr McCaskill, that the sum of £lO be placed to the credit of the prize fund account, and that the balance of concert receipts, £3, be paid to general account. SAYINGS BANK. The chairman reported that he had, in conj unction with Mr Miles and the secretary, gone into the question of establishing a Penny Savings Bank, and decided that it was advisable to give it a trial. It would be necessary to appoint three trustees, one of whom would be the head master. Mr Levens moved, Mr Bates seconded, and it was carried—“ That Messrs Salmond, Russell, and Ferguson be appointed trustees of the Savings Bank Fund, and authorised to proceed with the establishment of the bank at once.” On the motion of Mr Russell, seconded by Mr D. Taylor, it was resolved that Mr D. Ferguson be appointed secretary and treasurer. The Secretary to the Education Board, in connection with this matter, advised that the necessary books would .be provided by the Government. PROPOSED GARDEN. The secretary reported that, in accordance with instructions, he had arranged for the ploughing of about a quarter of an acre of ground for the proposed garden. He asked if it was proposed to fence the same. The committee wore of opinion it was unnecessary. HOLIDAYS, ETC) It was resolved to close the school for mid-winter holidays from Friday, June 23rd, to Monday, July 10th, On the motion of Mr Bates, seconded by Mr Hooper, the secretary was in* struoted to write to the volunteers and ask for a rebate on the charge of hall for late concert. visitor’s report. Mr Taylor reported that on the occasion of his visit to the school there was a very poor attendance, the weather being wet. His attention had been drawn to the clock in Miss Phillips’ room, which required repairing or a new one procured in its place. He suggested that the macrocarpa trees in front of the school be cut down to about 7ft. It was resolved that the head master or secretary instruct the janitor to cut the trees as suggested, and the Secretary was authorised to get some repairs done to the gate. Messrs Russell and McCaskill were appointed visitors for the month. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £l2 17s 8d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
