GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The Geraldine Road Board met yesterday. Present —Messrs F. E. Flatman (chairman), Deßenzy, K, Br phy, Metcalf, and Kelland. TENDERS. Tenders received during the month for repairs to cottages were;—No. 3/9, W. Waters, £3B 10s, no deposit, informal; J. H. Dean, £39 10s; Comer & Larcombe, £39 (accepted). The following tenders were accepted yesterday;— No. 380, formation drains, etc., near Kings’, Rhubarb Flat, —F. W. Bennett, £l2 ; Thos. Corkery, £ll 15s; Win. Scolly, £ll (accepted). No. 381, shingling roads, near Button’s, Rangitata Flat—Matthew Daley, £97; Daniel Gregan, £B9 10s; Timothy Sugrue, £B9 (accepted). I SMALL BIRDS NUISANCE. The Geraldine County Council wrote, in reply to resolution from recent conference of road boards, that the council resolved—“ That this council accept the responsibility of dealing with the small birds’ nuisance for a period of two years, as requested by the conference of this county’s road board chairmen and endorsed by the several road board’s represented thereat.” The council further notified that Mr Aymes had been appointed to take charge of the destruction of small birds in the county, and that Mr Aymes will meet the Geraldine Road Board overseer for information. The road boards would be supplied with poisoned grain for distribution in small quantities to the ratepayers. Mr Kelland hoped the council would deal with the matter satisfactorily. Hp was in favor of the local boards having • control of the small birds’ nuisance. Mr Deßenzy agreed with Mr Kelland In this. Mr Flatman said that the Levels Road Board had no right to introduce fresh matter when sending the confirmation qf the conference resolution to the council, geeiug that the said matter was not dealt Y?ith at the recent conference of road boards. The Geraldine County Acclimatisation Society wrote asking the board not to lay poisoned grain on the roads, as the quail whiph the soriety imported frequent the pads more than paddocks, and would probably be destroyed.—The matter of poisoning is now in the hands of the county council.
CORRESPONDENCE. » Correspondence was read;— From Bank of New South Wales, Timaru, asking that H. and S. Wood’s name be placed on the rate roll for reserve 389, lot 12, in place of the hank’s paroo.rr-Granted From Mr B. B. Amyes, requesting his name be substituted on the rate roll by Albert James Blackmore s for 19604 freehold. —Value to be inserted and then the request will be granted. From Mrs E. Buckley, Pleasant Valley, notifying that she will fence, within thirty days of date, the part of the road that runs on her property in front of Mr T. Quaid’s house.—Mrs Buckley to be notified that in case thy fancy ia not put on thy proper
line the board will hold her responsible for any encroachment on the road. From Mr W. Grant, Timaru, agreeing to get gorse removed from his section at •south Rangitata. From Mr Alex. Rose, asking to have his name substituted by that of Mr Robert Cross, for Section 10,880. Granted. From the Geraldine Council, asking payment of £BO 8s 3d, the board’s share of the half-yearly contribution to the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board.—Amount to be paid. From the Ashburton Drug Company, and also from Mr Francis Franks, forwarding prices of poisoned grain.—Referred to the county council. From Mr G. F. Lovegrovo, Gapes’s Valley, asking permission to erect a temporary fence across the roadway above Gilbert’s, and stating that he had got permission from Messrs Wreathall, Foster and Wright, residents.—Granted on the usual terms; gate to be properly hung. From Mr A. Blackmore, Gapes’s Valley, drawing attention to the bad state of the water-tables and culverts leading down the hill on the western side of his property. —Overseer to report. From Mr F. Rowell, Longbeach, re price of his poisoned grain.—Referred to county council. From Mr William Middlemiss, requesting that the water-race running past Section 15,460 be cleaned out.— Board suggests that applicant apply to the county council to clean out the water i ace, then the board will clean their portion afterwards. From the Geraldiue County Acclimatisation Society, stating that they had determined that steps should be taken to bring the small birds’ nuisance under the no ice of the Government, with a vie,w to have poisoning compulsory throughout the South Island, if not throughout the colony, on certain specified dates.—Resolved : “ That this board supports the proposed measure.” From Mr H. F. Brown, Woodbury, requesting that the drain on the low side of the road in front of his section 15892 be cleaned out.—The overseer to report. From the Timaru Harbor Board, forwarding lithographed plan of the harbor showing the present position of shingle accumulation. INTERVIEWS. Mr Mills waited on the board offering Is per chord for permission to take firewood from the road between the river and Mr Wreathall’sat the Kakahu bush.—The board accept the offer on condition that they can cancel the permission at any time. Mr McShane waited on the board re the backing of water from the water-race on to 20 acres of his land by Mr Deßenzy keeping a sluice in the water-race. Mr Flatraan thought the board were not liable and that the grievance was a private one between Messrs McShane and Debeuzyand suggested that a law suit would settle the matter once for all. The board decided that they were not liable in the matter and left it to the parties implicated to settle. Mr A. W. Macdonald waited on the board requesting them to visit his laud in a body and view the damage done by the diversion of the river on to his land. —lt was resolved not to accede to Mr Macdonald’s request. overseer’s report. The overseer reported as follows : The weather having been favorable during the latter part of the month the works in hand have made good progress. The undermentioned have been completed since'* last meeting :—Contracts—roofing and repairs to cottages, Talbot street, and shingling road near Tavener’s, Reserve 349, Belfield Flat. The protective works above Orari Bridge have been also completed, and are acting well in diverting the stream from the road. Works tteuded to—The following roads have been repaired with shingle and broken meral: —Rangitata Bridge Road, Cooper’s Creek, Orari Gorge, Pleasant Valley, Orari, and Belfield; a few others require attention. Applications—l have made estimates of cost for forming and shingling boundary road near Mr Tripp’s, and road leading to the saw-mill, Orari Gorge ; also the road near Fifield’s. The Land Board—At the request of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, I visited Christchurch and interviewed the Land B card in reference to the “ Thirds and Fourths ” accruing from Crown Lands in this district. Poisoned Wheat—l have obtained a supply of poisoned wheat, but there appears to be a slack demand at present, owing perhaps to very little being sown.—l have, etc., U . Shiers Overseer.” The report was read and approved, and it was decided to do the work required on roads near Mr Tripp’s, and the sawmill, Orari Gorge. - ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £317 0s lOd were passed for payment, and the board rose.
