The Novosti, commenting on Count Kaluoky's speech, says that Russia will certainly heJp Austria to establish friendly relations. Washington, June 6. The President has announced that there will have to be an extra session of Congress in September to consider the financial condition which menaces the country's welfare. The crisis has been brought about by the compulsory purchase of large quantities of silver, wnich have to remain idle, and the result is a drain on gold from the national reserve, whereby other nations are being strengthened at the expense of the United States. New York, June 6. Armed men seized a bank in Denteville, Kanas, and compelled the cashier to convey £20,000 in gold to a buggy which they had in readiness outside the building. The cashier took refuge in a newspaper office, which was fired into by the robbers, who afterwards decamped. Two civilians were killed in attempting to regain the money. AUSTRALIAN CABLE. Sidney, June 6. Mr Kidd, Postmaster-General, has given notice of a motion, approving of a vote of £IO,OOO per annnm to subsidise the Vancouver mail service, It is reported that the rich mimeral discoveries near Burra have fizzled out for the present, so far as shallow sinking is concerned. Further tests will be made in deep sinking, June 8. The Melbourne Railway Commissioners have dispensed with the services of Mr Alison Smith, head of the Locomotive Department, The Village Settlements Bill was thrown out in the Legislative Assembly. The Crown Landß Labour Settlement Bill, which has been substituted for it, proposes to grant land leases to Boards of Control, who will be empowered to establish industries and apportion the profits to members. The Government will advanqe sums ranging from £ls to £25 per head to the Boards, who will repay the amount with 4 per cent, interest added. Sentence was passed to-day on, the "long firm" swindlers. Carey, James, and Stewart, received each five years' penal servitude. Qresham was sentenced tq four years, Parker to two years a.nd ten months, and Ogle to two years,, The, remainder were acpuifcted, The colder Tamar- eoilided with the North Shore ferry steamer this evening. The latter was cut down to the water line, and had to be beached to prevent her sinking. There was excitement arnqng, yhe passengers on the ferry steamer, but fortunately no one was injured. Adelaide, June 8. The Governor opened Parliament in person. The Government proposed to economise in connection with the naya} and military expediture, aucl salaries of Ciyil Servants would lie reduced. Measures would be introduced, offering improved facilities for land settlement The Government, it was announced,, were in communication with the other Australian colonies concerning international freetrade. In co.u elusion, Government believed tliat the troubles novy agitating the Australian Cabinets would be productive of good, and show the neeessity for mutual support, Brisbane, June 7. The food funds locked up in suspended banks have bee.n assigned to the Government, who are paying the committee in cash.
