IMPERIAL POLITICS.
London, June 4. In the House of Commons, in Committee on the Homo Rrile Bill, Mr E. W Pyrne, Q.C., member for Walthamston brought forward an amendment, prohibit ing the Irish Parliament passsing law respecting fire-arms, and armed societies Mr Morley said it was impossible withhold the right to legislate ou such
matters, with the exception of arming foxmilitary purposes. Mr Balfour insisted that the entire control of armaments must be vested in the Imperial Parliament. Mr Gladstone replied that it was essential to give the Irish power to deal with riots. The amendment was rejected by a majority of 83. An infernal machine was discovered in the Exchequer Court, Dublin. It bore the words “ Remember Jixdge Murphy.” The clockwork wss not geared up, and thus prevented an explosion. The Unionist leaders have had a conference, at which it was arranged that a large number of further amendments should be offered to the Home Rule Bill. Sir Henry James will re-propose the amendment, expressly declaring Imperial supremacy. June 5. Ulster enrolled 170,000 members as a defence union, and members of the assembly to-day. Mr W. Saunders, Liberal member for Walworth, does not attend divisions on the Home Rule Bill, arguing that the present House of Commons is incompetent to give Ireland a new constitution. The action is being followed by Mr Thomas Henry Boltou, Liberal member for St. Paucas North. Ministers fear that this abstention may prove contagious. June 6. The Dublin Council have rejected a motion that congratulatory messages should be sent to the Queen and the Prince of Wales on the occasion of the marriage of the Duke of York to Princess May. In the House of Lords, the Marquis of Salisbury said that the Irish Home Rule Bill was beginning to look very sickly. June 7. The Government accepted an amendment to the Home Rule Bill, debarring the Irish Parliament from sending repretatives to or having relations with foreign States.
