CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKET. At the Addington yards on Wednesday there were fair entries of stock. Fat Sheep—Abmit 8000 sheep were yarded, fully half of which were in the fat pens. Prices compare favorably with those of last week. A very good line of forward-conditioned two and four-tooth crossbred wethers changed hands at 14s ; mixed crossbreds sold up to 14s 9d, ci ossbred ewes to 14s, merino wethers from 4s 2d to 4s 6d, and ewes up to 4s. There were only a few crossbred lambs offered, which sold at from 8s to lls. Crossbred wethers brought from 14s 3d to 18s 9d, ewes from 12s to 19s, mixed cossbreds from 14s to 17s 7d, and maiden ewes from 17s to 18s sd, halfbred wethers from 15s to 19s, one splendidly-finished line bringing as high as 21s, ewes from 10s 6d to 13s 6d, and mixed halfbreds from 15s to 19s. fciome prime merino wethers sold at from 13s 6d to 14s 9d, while inferior brought from 6s lid to 10s. Fat Lambs —The few fat lambs entered sold at from 9s 6d to lls Bd.
Fat Cattle—The supply of fat cattle was limited to 85 head, which included a few good three-year-old steers, the balance being made up of small handy he’ferp. Steers sold at from £7 to £9 ss, heifers at from £5 12s 6d to £8 2s 6d, aud cows at from £5 5s to £7 7s 6d. At these prices best quality beef is worth 22s 6d per 1001 b, and second quality about 20s. Store Cattle —The eutiy of store cattle was slightly larger than that of la.it week, and there was a corresponding improvement in quality, which caused business to be done at prices a shade in advance of last week’s quotations. Some forwardconditioned steers came in for considerable notice, but the owner’s estimate of their value did not meet with approval, aud they were not sold. Steers sold at up to £4 10s, cows at from £2 5s to £5 10s, and yearlings at from 30s to 38s. A very large entry of dairy cows met with a dull market, owners’ reserves in a good many cases standing in the salesmen’s way. Sales were effected at from £5 to £8 10s. Pigs—The entry of pigs was again large, including some good lines of baconers, but prices were decidedly in favor of buyers, and it is more than likely they wi’i remain so, DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday : Wheat—For good lines of tuscan and velvet there is a good demand; medium quality not easily placed. Prime quality saleable at 2s 9d; medium, 2s 4d to 2s Sd; fowls’ wheat, good whole grain, 2s 3d to 2s 4d; medium,ls lid to 2s Id. Barley—Chevalier, 3s 9d to 4s 3d; Cape, 2s 9d to 3s, for malting qualities. Oats have very good enquiry and are easily placed off trucks. G-ood milling, to Is lOd; prime short feed, Is 8d to Is lOd; long Tartarians for seed, bright, Is lid to 2s. Hops—ls, f.0.b., Nelson, Potatoes —Good derwents, 60s and wanted (supplies short during the week). Pigs have inquiry, for suitable sizes and quality. Hams, 9d; bacon, Bird. Chaff —Has demand, prime, 45s to 50s; good, 40s to 42s 6d. Salt butter —Demand quiet, to Sd, packages extra.
Cheese in better demand, Akaroa large, 4£d to Efoney—Extracted, 661 b tins, other sorts from to 4^d. Grass Seeds—Ryegrass, 2s to 2s 6d ; machined up to 3s 3d ; old pasture to 3s 9d ; cocksfoot, to 4d. Melbourne onions, £6; Canterbury, £5 10s.
Roller flour, £7 10s to £8; stone, £6 10s to £7 ; 50’s, 10s more. Bran—£2 10s to £2 15s. Pollard, £3 10s,
Sheepskins—At auction on Tuesday competition was active for al 1 sorts, prices realised being on a level with former rates, but it is not possible to record any advance in values. Country dry crossbreds, inferior to medium, brought Is 9d to 3s 9d; do do merino, Is 7d to 2s lOd; fullwoolled crossbreds —good, 3s 9d to 4s lid; best, 5s to 6s lOd ; do do merino—good, 2a 9d to 3s lOd; best, 3s lid to 5s 9d; dry pelts, 2d to Is 6d; green crossbred skins—best, 3s 6d to 3s lOd ; choice, 3s lid to 4s 3d ; medium to good, 2s lOd to 3s sd; do do merino, Is lOd to 2s 7d; lambskins, 2s 3d to 3s 9d. Hides—There is no alteration to report in prices lately quoted, which may be repeated—say, for heavy hides, 2d to 2|d; extra, 2fd to 3d; medium, IJd to Ifd; inferior to medium, Id to l|d per lb. Tallow —The market continues fairly steady, and no fluctuations of any consequence apparent. Last week’s quotations are unchanged. Quotations —For best rendered mutton, 21s 6d to 22s 6d; medium to good, 18s 6d to 20s 6d; inferior to medium, 14s 6d to 17s 6d. Rough fat is in excellent demand and readily saleable immediately on arrival. Best mutton caul is worth 14s to 14s 6d; medium to good, 12s 6d to 13s 9d; mferior to medium, lls to 12s per cwt. DENEDhTSTOCK MARKETS. At the Burnside Market on Wednesday the following business was transacted: — Fat Cattle —180 head yarded, of which about 40 or 50 were good to prime beef, a large proportion of the remainder being cows and heifers of mqtflqm to inferior quality. Competition was very slack at the commencement of the sale, .but improved considerably as the sale advanced; prices on the whole showed a slight improvement on those of last week : —Best bullocks sold at £8 to £9 12s 6d ; medium, £6 5s to £7 15s; light, £4 5s to £5 15s ; cows and heifers, £3 10s to, £T i>3. Fat Sheep—lo2B forward, of which about 150 ' Were meriilds. There was 'again a'icaicity of prime sheep, the ! majority of the supply being medium and ; light wethers, good useful mutton, and a few old ewes. There was a demand, and for prime sheep prices ruled, quite as high as those ruling a fortnight ago. Mediiup aim Inferior' quality had also a good sale. Best crossbred wethers sold at 16s Gd to 18s 9d; medium do do, at 13s 9d to 15s 9d ; light do do, at 12s to \ 12s 2d 5 beat do ewes } at 14s Gd tolGsGd ;
ordinary, at 11s 6d to 13s 6d; merino wethers, at 9s to lls 6d. Fat Lambs—ll 3 penned, which sold, under brisk competition, at up to 12s. Piga—Only 60 penned, representing all sorts except stores. Prices ruled a little better than those obtained a fortnightago. Suckers sold at 7s to lls, slips at J7s to 235, porkers at 26s to 355, baconers at 40s to 60s, extra heavy at 64s to 76a. Potatoes, £2 10s to £2 15s. Cheese, New Zealand, factory-made in bond, s£d. New Zealand hemp is selling in small lots at from £l7 to £l9 per ton.
Adelaide, May 31 Wheat, 3s 2£d. Flour, £8 to £8 2s 6d. Oats, 3s to 3a 2d, duty paid. Barley, Cape, 2« Od to 3s. Bran, lOd; pollard, lid to 11 £d.
MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL
London. May 30. Two Australian wheat cargoes have been sold at 29s 4d, and 29s 7£d respectively. May 31. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 384,400 quarters, and for the Continent 164,800 quarters. Two cargoes of Australian wheat have been sold at 29s and 29s 3d. Share quotations—New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company’s, £110s; Dalgety and Co.’s, £4 10s. June 1. The Bank of England has received £160,000 in gold from America this week. The effect has been to cause a remarkable collapse in discounts. The Oriental Bank pays a second dividend of 2s m the pound.
