AUSTRALIAN POLITICS.
Sydney, May 26. It was expected that that there would be a big fight in the Legislative Assemblyover the Council's amendment to the Electoral Bill, but the Government surprised the members by accepting the amendment. The chief provisions of the measures are:-—Abolition of plural voting, reduction in the number of representatives to 125, single electorates, and one year's residence to be qualification for the franchise.
Brisbane, May 26. The Governor's speech in connection with the opening of Parliament, referred to the necessity for immediately calling Parliament together consequent on the financial convulsions. A measure would be introduced to relieve the finanacial pressure, and to place the currency on a sounder footing. Next year's revenue would require careful consideration. The revenue must be increased and expenditure decreased. The sugar industry was in a prosperous state, and the frozen meat trade was being firmly established. Reference was made, to the necessity for putting capital and labour in the colony on a more satisfactory footing.
