TEMUKA CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
On Thursday evening the first of the winter “ ingleside ” meetings was held, aud it proved move enjoyable than even the directors anticipated. In view of certain discomforts attached to the large Drill Shod the smaller hall was used, |aud very tastefully decorated by Mr T. Gunnion. The windows were draped with flags and curtains, aud the handsome banners of the society occupied conspicuous positions at each end of the hall. The lighting was good, and the floor in capital order. The directors, amongst whom Messrs Henry aud Murray (vicepresidents) and W. McLeod were conspicuous, had spared no pains to see that the visitors had every attention, aud very .comfortable arrangements were made for The catering was entrusted me J....-.J.CS. ■ i. j i to Mr J. MeCaskill, who aiso mm; Vc.li> able assistance as secretary in the temporary absence of Mr F. Archer, who now undertakes the duties so ably fulfilled until late ! y by Mr G. H. Mogridge. The music was supplied by Messrs Levens and Colville, and Mr W. Medium proyad himself a capital M,G. At eight o’clock about 120 members aud their friends were present, and, as a ticket of membersbip was essential to admission, the gathering must be looked upon as purely representative of the society. The pro? gramaie, which consisted mainly of dancing, with brief opportunities for refresh 2 ment and conversation, commenced shortly after 8 o’clock, when the society’s piper, Mr J. Mabiu, played an inspiriting march. This was headed by the president, Mr A. M. Clark, and Mrs Quinn, who were followed by Sir William and Lady Blunden, the principal directors and visitors. From this time out dancing was kept up with spirit, the national dances especially proving attractive, aud the proceedings did not terminate until shortly after twelve, when - e Auld Lang Syne ” was played. There was a pleasant sociability and informality about the gathering that is an augury of the continued success of these “ socials,” and the directors are justified in expecting the support of the public. As a number of new members have lately joined, it may be well to raention ? as has beeu doos in
revious years, that the society docs not nticipate making a profit out of these gatherings. They are promoted solely to allow members to become acquainted with each other, and to afford them a pleasant hour or two of relaxation.
