London, May 4,

Mr Asquith, Home Secretary, has again refused to withdraw the troops and bluejackets from Hull. He contends that they are doing good service in assisting to maintain order in the town. The National Conference of Miners are discus-dog the proposal for a general strike of miners in order to lessen the output and prevent a reduction in rates.

The Bristol dockers have struck as a protest against the employment of nonunionists.

Mr Gladstone supported the second reading of the Miners’ Eight Hours’ Bill. The Irish members unanimously supported the measure, and so did most of the Mini-tors.

John Morley, Burt, McArthur, Fenwick, J. Wilson, and thirty other G ‘ads to mans voted against it. There was considerable mixing up of parties in the division.

The Dundee strike has been settled, a reduction of 2£ per cent of wages being accepted. Pickets posted by the Unionists at Hull seized a number of free laborers, but they were released by the police.

During the disturbances at Hull the policeused their batona freely,and several Unionists, who were attacking the free labourers, were injured before order was restored.

The employers have consented to reopen parleying with the Hull strikers. Mr C. H. Wilson. M.P., threatens to transfer his vessels to ihe Norwegian flag should the men continue the d-’spute.

Sydney, May 6

An almost general notice has been issued to the Western colliers that it is intended to make a reduction ju wages.
