THE TEMUKA MUSICAL SOCIETY

TO THE EDITOU. Sir,—As has sometimes happened before, matters musical have got a Jittle out of tune. It appears our local musical society has decided that dancing is an essential element iu their evenings' recreation, aud by a vote of the majority have practically excluded those who, on principle, are unable to countenance the practice. To an impartial observer, this action—which, in strict justice it should be said, seems mainly directed against one prominent member—is to be regretted for several reasons:—lst, in - a sma'l community like ours any society calling itself musical should open its doors wide enough to admit all eligible persons who are genuine lovers of music, without compromising their principles on other matters ; 2nd, dancing ought not to be made a test question for admission to a respectable musical societjr; 3rd, those who prefer this form of amusement have abundant opportunity for its gratification without obtruding it on others to whom it may be distasteful. If in the minds of the majority music aud dancing are so inseparably connected, why not openly own it and change the designation to A Musical and Dancing Society J ,J There would then bo no danger of'the present difficulty recurring, —I am, etc., Consistency.
