CHICAGO EXHIBITION.
Washington, May 1. A thief stole Columbus' ashes from the Chicago Exhibition and decamped with his booty, but was eventually captured by a watchman who pursued him. Very few of the courts at the Chicago Exhibition will be ready before next month. Sixty divisions are completed, while one .bundled and forty are still in course of construction. The New South Wales display is highly praised by tlw Commission.
May 2. The Chicago Exhibition was formally opened yesterday. President Cleveland made an speech, in which he referred in eulogistic terms to the stupendous achievement of American enterprise. At the conclusion of his remarks he pressed a button whic.li started the machinery, made the fountains play, and set chimes ringing. At the same moment over seven hundred flrgs were unfurled, cannon boomed, aud the enormous assemblage joined in tho Hallelujah Chorus. It was a magnificent transformation scene. The total expenditure on the Exhibition buildings is put down at 20,000,00(1 dollars.
In his speech President said that the strong reorientation of all the countries o| world at the Exhibition in tho nobleit the rraternity of nations. lie welcomed Europe to compete with and view \]\<s industrial triumph of a vigorous yica, and the fabric ot "y;.up.djla l r Qq-.' vernment.
