The Bishop of Tasmania, writing in the New Review, says that the Kanakas understand that recruiting is voluntary, aud are anxious to hire themselves out.
The Queensland National Bank intends to proceed against the Standard for libel for stating that there had been a serious mn on the bank in Brisbane.
Viscount Gormanston, the new Governor of Tasmania, sails in the Rimutaka. Aprii 29. The Queen has arrived at Windsor. Colonel Hughes Hallet declined to give evidence in the libel action which he had brought against the Weekly Times, his excuse being that he desired to spare the feelings of the girl to whom he had refunded the sum of £SOOO. Defendants asserted that ho was afraid to go into the box, also that the girl was honourably married, aud that plaintiff was unwilling to re-open the sore. A verdict was entered up for defendants. At a meeting of the Indo-European Telegraph Company, the chairman stated that the colonies would soon be able to abolish the increase of rates. He declared that the depression had had a salutary effect in developing resotirces. Be thought that if the cry of “ Australia for the Australians” was continued, it would lead to ruin.
The survivors of the ship Templemore, which was lost in the Pacific while on a voyage from Wallaroo to London, have arrived at Southampton. They relate a thrilling tale of suffering. For five days their boat was alongside the iceberg, and their only provisions were pounds of biscuits between twenty-four persons. The captain’s wife rowed with the others. It is expected that the Government will concentrate their efforts iu the direction of passing the Employers Liability Bill and the Parish Councils Bill, as the Registration Bill is regarded as doomed, being impracticable. Blackham was chosen captain, a,nd Bannerman vice-captain of the Australian eleven.

St. Petersburg, April 29. The death is announced of the Duke Doukuko, of Karsafoff. The reported interference with the Czar’s train by peasants at Karkoft is denied, but an effort had been made by someone to derail the train. How the rails came to be torn up while the soldiers guarded the route is shrouded in mystery. Washington, April 27.
Two towns were destroyed by a waterspout in Oklohama, Indian territory. Sixty people were killed. Over one hundred people were killed by the waterspout in Oklohama, wh?le 500 were injured. A cyclone at Chickasaw, in lowa, overthrew the Catholic Church. The officiating priest escaped, but fifty of the congregation were killed.

Diamonds of the value of .£2OOO, which were stolen from the private residence of Mr Keating, South Yaira, on the 14th inst., have been recovered, and two men have been taken into custody on suspicion of being connected with the theft. An influential meeting of citizens, at which the Acting-Governor and the Premier were present, adopted a seheme of labour colonies, the Government agreeing to reserve land, and give pound for pound for public subscriptions to find work for the unemployed. The Cabinet have decided on a scheme which is expected to effect a saving of 0,000 in the Education Depaitment. Brisbane, April 30.
