IN MEMORIAM.
THE HON. JOHN BALLANCE,
Our country bows its youthful head, With heartfelt pangs of grief, Whilst sorrow all around is shed, In reverence we adore the dead, Our loved and worthy chief.
We mourn the loss of one so dear, Garlands of grief we send, Zealandia stoops to shed a tear Around her Premier’s honored bier — Humanitarians’ friend.
All human power, physicians’ skill, Could not avert this blow ; Our sangu’ne hopes were raised until — Obedient to a mightier whl— Our chieftain was laid low.
The greatest praise we can bestow Fails to express his worth ; The labourer did his value know, And capital was not his foe ; Such men we want on earth.
But earthly labours all arc o’er, In history write his name, For peer and peasant must adore In admiration every law That through this statesman came. Rest, warrior, rest 1 Thy country served, More hallowed is the tomb ; Where others have beeu a ll , unnerved, From purpose firm thou hast not swerved (Thy death has cast a gloom). Upholding laws of liberty Thy praLe we must extol, Abiding in true unity, And, following in thy footsteps, we Will make success our goal. H. H. Heatley, Orari.
