PARISH MEETING AT TEMUKA.
The annual meeting of members of the Church of England in the Parish of Temuka took place on Tuesday evening. There was a fair attendance, considering the bad state of the weather. The Rev. W. E. Gillam occupied the chair, and opened the meeting with prayer, afterwards reading an interesting report of church work since his acceptance of the cure. Mr E. C. Dann, the parishioners' warden, presented the balance-sheets, which were of a satisfactory nature. The General Fund showed a small balance in hand, the receipts being more than last year, and the expenditure less, although a sum of £3O had been spent on the parsonage grounds and in improvements, and £25 2s 5d expended outside the parish; he congratulated the ministers on the increased attendance since the New Year, the offertories also being 50 per cent more for the first quarter of the year. The mortgage on the Parish Hall had not been reduced during the year, but it waa expected that some part would be paid off after the annual festival next month. The receipts for rent of hall and donations had been sufficient to meet current expenses and pay interest on the mortgage, a small credit balance being in hand. The full amount of the Stipend Fund had not been collected, and the incoming vestry were requested to appoint members in different parts of the parish to see to the collecting of this fund. Mr Robert Pinckney reported that the Sunday school was in a flourishing condition, the attendance being large and the financial condition good. Before proceeding with the election of officers Mr J. Talbot moved a most hearty vote of thanks to the Revs. Gillam and Butterfield for their services to the church, and expressed his confident opinion that the coming year would be a prosperous one iu all branches of Church work. He also wished to thank the organist and choir, Sunday School Superintendent and teachers, the ladies who had rendered valuable assistance at various gatherings, and others who had helped in any way in the work.—This was carried with hearty applause. On the motion of Mr Hayhurst, a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Cutten for his kindness in auditing the books. The election of officers was then proceeded with. The incumbent nominated Mr J. T. M. Hayhurst as his warden, and that gentleman expressed his pleasure in accepting the office. Mr E. Herbert was nominated by Mr Dann, and seconded by Mr J. Talbot as parishioners' warden, and unanimously elected. Over ten members being nominated as vestrymen, a ballot was taken with the result that the following gentlemen were elected:— Messrs Benbow, Dann, H. J. Gladstone, D. L. Inwood, J. Langridge, Pilbrow, Pinckney, Robt. Smith, J. Talbot, and E. Whitehead.
Mr Dann said that the mombera of the Church had found the services of the Rev. Mr Butterfield very acceptable, and he therefore moved a vote of thanks to Messrs Hayhurst, Gladstone, Inwood, and J. Talbot, and the Rev. W. E. Gillam, who had provided means whereby Mr Butterfield had been appointed without any charge being made on the Church funds.—The motion was seconded by Mr Pilbrow, and carried with acclamation.
The vestry were requested to arrange for one of the members being in attendance at the door at all services; also to provide a supply of prayer and hymn books for the use of visitors, Mr G-. Davey offering a donation of 12s towards the purchase of same.
There being no other business, the meeting, which had been a very hearty one, closed with the chairman pronouncing the benediction. The reports and balance-sheets will shortly be forwarded to members.
