ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, April 12. Sir C. Tupper is applying to the Admiralty to subsidise steamers running between Canada and Australia as Imperial cruisers. An explosion occurred in the Great Western Colliery, at Pontypridd, in Glamorganshire. Two hundred men were entombed, but 150 have now been rescued ; 50 are still entombed, and all hope of saving them has been abandoned. Five bodies have been recovered. The explosion was caused by sparks from the pit engine igniting gas in the mine. The Duke of Westminister has sold his residence, known as Cleveden, near Maindenhead, to Mr William Astor, the American millionaire. One-fourth of the clerks in the Central Post Office at Paris are prostrated by influenza. M. Turpin declares that he intends to expose the scandals in the War Office. He accuses the officials of corruption, and of selling the secret of melinite to all the leading Powers. M. de Freycinet ex-Miuister, denies the accusations. Vienna, April 12. A discharged servant attacked Cardinal Yaezary, the Primate of Hungary. His secretary, Kohl, who cime to his rescue, received five sbabs, but the Cardinal escaped. Seventeen deaths from cholera are reported in Galicia. Brussels, April 12. Owing to the Chamber of Deputies re-, jecting the proposals for universal suffrage, riot s have occurred in the city, and an excited mob came into collision with the police. The proposals were j thrown out by a large majority. Madrid, April 11. ( It is reported here that news has i arrived of the occupation by the Japanese of the Pellen Islands, a portion of the I Caroline group claimed by Spain. The Government of the Phillipines has cabled ( to Spain for reinforcements, and pre- ) parationa are being made for the despatch of troops. Cairo, April 12. A French squadron, consisting of eight ironclads and fifteen cruisers and torpedo boats, has arrived at Alexandria. The vessels will make a stay of a week. New York, April 13. A severe cyclone has been experienced in the South-Western States. Townships have been wrecked, and railway and road traffic is disorganised.
AUSTRALIAN CABLE, Wi-DNEV, April 12. At a meeting of Government supporters, the Premier, Sir G. R. Dibba, said that owing to the recent tactics of the retrenchment party in connection with the estimates unless his supporters voted with the Government the only course open would be to throw the Government upon the hands of the Opposition or ask for a dissolution. It is understood that a motion reducing the estimates by an additional £1§2,000 will be adopted. Of this saving £75,000 will be out of education, £25,000 off mines and agriculture, and £20,000 off the Treasury Department. Compared with the previous year the estimates will show a reduction of £150,000. Beilins, a hoy sixteen years of age, has been sentenced to ten years’ penal servitude, for stoning a Chinaman to death.
