A Valuable Estate.--The Cell Hills Estate, situate in the Ellesinere district, close to the railway, comprising 1 (>(!!) acres, was solrl by auction on Saturday in lots of from 52 to 205 acres. A Serious Matter.—A deputation from the American Order of Oddfellows waited on the Minister of Education at Wellington on Saturday, pointing 1 out that a number of friendly societies in the colony had adopted a scale of fees which was inadequate to evi r provide the benefits offered, and urged that the Government should not register any fresh societies whose rates were found by an actuary to be insufficient, and that the societies already registered should be notified that where their financial unsoundness has been established by actual investigation, they must within a certain time place themselves on a sound financial footing. The New South Wales Government, it was mentioned, had already adopted a similar course. Mr Mason, Registrar of Friendly Societies, said that many were absolutely bad, but that represented by the deputation was perfectly sound. He regarded many of the societies as absolutely hopeless, but in some cases a reform might save them. Mr Williams, Grand Master of Australia, said that among the unsound societies were the Railway Employees Benefit Society, the Protestant Alliance, the Hibernians, and the Sons and Daughters of Temperance. The Ancient Order of Foresters was insolvent to the extent of £(> per member. The Hon.
