THE PANAMA CANAL SCANDAL.
Paris, March 8. The second trial of the Panama directors and others, for bribery, has begun. The judge who is trying the Panama Canal directors, amid prolonged uproar, rebuked Charles De Lesseps for stating that the Government were largely responsible for the company paying enormous sums to bankers and newspapers. He specially instanced M. De Freycinet, M. Floquet, and M. Clemenceau, as supporters of this policy. De Lesseps stated that M. Floquet asked and obtained 300,000 francs (£12,000) for newspapers v Inch were opposing Boulanger. His coolness and frankness are a strong contrast to the the caution previously displayed, and he is evidently disposed to reveal everything. He reproached the Judge for trying to shelter the Government.
