THE ALLEGED BREACH OF THE LICENSING ACT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Would you kindly correct a misstatement in your issue of February 9th of the proceedings of the Geraldiue Magistrate's Court, in re " alleged breach of the Licensing Act." The witness for the defence, Frederick Newman, stated, as quoted, that he " had picked three men up in his trap after they had tramped a good many miles, and that he would swear that they were sober," but, after a long rigmarole, he added, " these were not the men- Mr Barker was speaking about." I am not surprised at your reporter misunderstanding him, as the Bench was almost misled by it, as was also, apparently, the lawyer for the defence. 1 think, in justice to these three men, who are well known in the district, this accidental aspersion on their character should be corrected.—l am, &c, W. E. Barker.
