GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above board was held yesterday. Present — Messrs F. R. Flatmau (chairman), Deßenzy, Kelland, and Brophy. CORRESPONDENCE. Borrespondence was read and dealt with as follows : From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, asking for copy of items of the sum of £123 6s paid to the board's credit.—Copy furnished by clerk. From Messrs Aspinall <fc Salmond, instructed by Mr lnwood, acknowledging receipts of board's letter, and declining to be made a " party " to the settlement mentioned by them. —Resolved —That a copy of this letter be sent to the Temuka Road Board, and that the board will not allow any obstruction to be placed in the natural water-course more than was there on the day the board, in conjunction with the Temuka board, visited the place." From Mr B. Moore, asking to have the name of Mr Murdo McLeod placed on the rate-roll as owner and occupier of R.S. 2526, 19307, 17973, and 19460. Granted.
From the clerk Geraldine Town Board re the cremation of dead animals on riverhed balow stone bridge. Satisfactory. From Mr H. E. Musgrave, asking to have his name erased from the rateroll, and the name of Mr Donkin substituted in its place for 480 acres 3 ropds 35 perches. —Granted. From Mr J. Jeffries, Rangitata Flat, re contractors' horses straying on his paddocks, and asking for posts and wire to prevent this.—Board cannot concede to recpiest. From Lands and Survey Department, re proposed road at Hae-hae-te-Moaua Gorge, stating that the board's proposal that the work should be done by unemployed will be considered, and asking for estimated cost of work, and whether the board will agree on " thirds " being used.
From Messrs Hay & Postlethwaite, Timaru, re the claim of Mr Alex Macdonald for £2O compensation for injury done to his land by the board erecting an embankment,statingtliat should the board prefer it Mr Macdonald would be willing to submit the matter to arbitration, but he could not consent to leave the matter in its present position.—The board declines to arbitrate, as they do not acknowledge any damages. From the Receiver of Land Revenue, advising the board that the sum of £123 6s had been lodged to their credit for thirds accrued.
From Captain G. F. Temple, Castlewood, stating that he wished the plank bridge leading from his paddock removed unless the board will grant a plank bridge at the proper crossing for the general public. He did not wish to prevent anyone from crossing his land, but he wished it understood that people crossing would not assume it as a right.—Replied to by overseer on January 19th. From Mr John Rice and Mr Joseph Robinson, stating that Captain Temple was petitioning the board to close the public road leading from Pain ton's cutting, saying it is his private property. They strongly objected to the road being closed, as it was a great public convenience. —Read.
From Clerk Mount Peel Eoad Board, sending £6 12s, half cost repairs etc., to Boundary road. From Mr W. P. Studholme, re amendments made by Government in amount of taxes assessed to him, and requesting a refund of money paid by him under protest. —Mr Studholme to be refunded £2 13s Id. From the Land and Income Tax Department, requesting the board to make the following alterations in the valuation roll:—Assessment sections 32, 33, 37, 35932, 36066, and reduce area from 362 a. lr. 31p. to 262 a. 2r. 36p., and valuation from £724 to £524, and various other alterations in names of owners, etc. overseer's report. The overseer reported as follows : " I have the honor to report for month ending to date as under: The works under contract have been somewhat delayed by the men leaving for the harvest, and two or three contractors will require an extension of time to complete their contracts. Stockbridge : As directed I have examined the site for a bridge over the creek near Mr Donkin's, and find that it would cost less for a bridge on tho upper side of the road than on the site of the present footway. Small Birds : A large quantity have been purchased since last meeting. The season is now over. General Rate : As instruated I took out summonses for the largest amounts outstanding, and have received since the last meeting £241 15s 6d, making a total of £IOO7 14s collected to date. The amount still outstanding is. £lO 10s Od, owing in small sums by twenty ratepayers, a few of whom are absentees and difficult to get at. Daymen ; The daymen have been employed in spreading shingle on contracts, and in tarring decks of bridges, repairs to fords in riverbeds, and other necessary work. —I have, etc., " Wat. Shiers, Overseer."
The report was read, and it was agreed to give contractors the usual harvest extension of time. The board could not entertain at present the work at Mr Donkin's. It was decided to continue to purchase small birds, and the clerk was instructed to continue to summons defaulters.
ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £177 IDs 8d ■were passed for paymont. The board then rose.
