THE PANAMA SCANDALS.

Paris, Feb. 7. It has been elicited that the Panama Company spent three and a-half million dollars in America in obtaining subscribers to loans. The indictments against MM. Rouvier, Deves, Grevy and Renault in connection with the Panama Canal disclosures have been dismissed. Senator Berat and MM. Provis, F.vuconues, members of the Chamber of Deputies, with the directors Dahiaut and Sans Leroy, have been ordered to stand their trial at the next Assizes. M. Grevy has sent the liquidators in the Panama Canal Company a cheque for the amount received by him from the Company in 1888. Feb. 9. The Chamber of Deputies has ordered indictments for bribery to be preferred against Charles De Lesseps, Fontin, Blondin, Gahron, Arthon, and five others. The cases against Baron Cottu and Dr Herz are still in suspense. The case against Cottu, Eiffel, and other directors of the Company for swindling are also unsettled. The debate in the Chamber of Deputies on the Panama Canal prosecutions was of an exciting character, and many members expressed a belief that the Government were screening M. Rouvier, whom it was decided to acquit. After a feeble protest, M. Ribot, the Premier, accepted a resolution, which was moved by M. Cavaignac, declaring that it was duty of the Government to repress corruption. The incident has greatly shaken the Ministry. Washington, Feb, 7. A Committee of of the House has ascertained that Ingersoll received £IOOO for promoting the Panama Canal scheme.
