ENGLISH AND FOREIGN,
London, Feb. 2
Mr J. Angus Sutherland is equipping a private expedition to explore the unknown regions of Australia on the tracks followed by Forrest and Giles, also to search for relics of Leichhardt. He is in hopes that the Royal Geographical Society will co-operate with him. The Jewish Charitable Society is sending 400 refugee Jews to Australia this week. They will be followed by a larger contingent next month. The imports for last month show a decrease in value of £5,500,000, and the exports a decrease of £1,120,000.
At a meeting of the Colonial Institute on the 14th inst.. Professor "Wallace will read a paper, in which he will contend that freezing only absorbs a portion of the surplus stock, and will suggest that the hind quarters of mutton be converted into hams by the sweet curing process, limiting the amount of salt. He expresses the opinion that this trade would be certain to develope a market. Mr Perceval, replying to soma statements which have appeared in the English Press, says that New Zealand is not pledged to guarantee debentures. A syndicate to construct harbours in New Zealand and Western Australia is being floated, and in the meantime an engineer is being despatched to those colonies to obtain concessions from the respective Governments. The Auchor liner Trinacria, has been lost on the coast of Corunna, in Spain, at exactly the same spot as the warship Serpent was wrecked some time ago. Thirty-seven of the crew were drowned. The Crown has abandoned the charge against Mr Pierce Mahoney, M.P., who was committed for trial a few weeks ago for assaulting Mr Mathew Henry, M.P., in a Dublin Court.

Sixty-two deaths have occurred at Marseilles in five days, but the doctors are not able to pronounce as to the character of the epidemic, which at first was supposed to be cholera. Medical men attribute the outbreak, to the fact that new sewers are being laid in the city. Rome, Feb. 9.
The Bauca Romana expended two and a half million lire (£100,000) inside and outside Parliament in promoting its Bill.

Three more shocks of earthquake heave been experienced at Zante, and the members of the Greek Royal Family, who are on a visit to the island, felt the full force of them. '

Three thousand settlers of Santa Fe have revolted against the wheat tax imposed by the Argentine Government. Washington, Feb, 7.
Mr Daily, American Commissioner for Xing Tubnriemo, has forwarded to the American Government a protest against the British flag being hoisted over the Gilbert Group, and asking the United States to annex the Islands. Feb. 8. The Senate has ratified an extradition treaty with Russia, providing that persona guilty of attempts to assassinate members of the Russian Imperial Family shall be extradited regardless of motives. New York, Feb. 9.
Meetings have been held in Texas, at which resolutions were passed denouncing the Executive for failing to capture lynchers.

Sydney, Feb. 8. The Legislative Council has inserted a property vote in the Electoral Bill, on the condition that two votes are not exercised in one electorate. The Assembly has rejected the second reading of the Totalisator Bill by 33 to 2G. The Daily Telegraph, in an article ou the political situation yesterday, made scathing accusations against the Government. In this morning’s issue a qualified article appeared, stating that there was no intention of reflecting on the \ personal honour of the gentleman j attacked. The officers of an American vessel just arrived from the Gilbert Island declare that when they left the group a month ago the influence of King Tubnriemo was waning, and the foreign and native residents were enthusiastic over the British administration. Mr Wragg predicts a great monsoonal disturbance, which will produce a great quantity of rain. It is now in the neighbourhood of Riverina. Newcastle, Feb. 9.
