CRICKET.

There was a large attendance present on Thursday to witness the match between the Town and Country teams in Victoria Park, Temuka. A splendid pitch had been prepared, and was highly praised by members of both teams. The Town team, captained by Jefferson, was the first to bat, Cayley leading their opponents into the field, Pritt (20), Macintosh (19), Malcolmson (12), and Perry (11) got into double figures by good and careful batting; the remainder of the team found the bowling too good for them and soon retired, the innings closing for 78 runs. The interval between the innings was pleasantly spent in partaking of afternoon tea kindly provided by Mrs J. T. M. Hayhurst, assisted by several young ladies, the players and a large number of visitors being favoured withjtheir kind attentions. On going to the wickets the Country started badly, but the batting of W. K. Macdonald (40, not out), Fish (35), and H. W, Moore soon gave their team a decided lead; the two former players batted very carefully until the winning hit was made, and they then made things pretty lively for the opposing fieldsmen. Moore was freely, and was good for a large score, when in playing a ball from Macintosh, he did not get well on to it, and was caught by the bowler. At call of time there were still five wickets to fall, and the team had a lead of 43 ruus. The fielding all round was good ; some chances were not taken that should have been, the winning team being more culpable than their opponents in this respect. Studholme did most of the bowling for the country, his average 24 runs, 3 maidens, 3 wickets; B. R. Macdonald, 14 runs, 0 wickets; Fish, 24 ruus, 3 wickets, 1 maiden; Dignan, 9 runs, 2 wickets; Hayhurst, X run, 1 wicket, 1 maiden.
