Lord Northbourne is dead,

Sir R. Hamilton, ex-Governor of Tasmania, speaking at Edinburgh, said that he was convinced that the Australian colonies would shortly be united in one commonwealth.

After an extremely close fight the Huddersfield election resulted in the Conservative candidate, Sir J. Crossland, heading the poll with 70(58 ; Mr Woodhead (Liberal), 7033. The Marquis of Salisbury, speaking at Liverpool, advocated the extension of the Empire in order to prevent other Powers seizing unoccupied lands and raising the brass wall of protection against British goods. The football match between England and Ireland resulted in a victory for the former, and that between Scotland and Wales in a victory for the latter. Mr J. Chamberlain predicts that twofifths of the Irish people would be willing to take up arms to resist the granting of Home Rule to Ireland.

The late Duke of Marlborough bequeathed £20,000 to Lady Colin Campbell. Feb. 0. Lord Brabourne is dead. The Cirencester election has been declared void on the ground of equality of votes.

The election of a member to represent Burnley in the House of Commons, in place of Mr Jabez S. Balfour, took place to-day, and resulted in the return of Mr Philip Stanhope, the Liberal candidate. The polling was Stanhope, 6100; Lindsay (Conservative), 5506. The field artillery have been armed with magazine carbines. Paris, Feb. 6.

In the Chamber of Deputies to-day, a debate took place on the French colonies. The Under-Secretary for the Colonial Department favoured a revision of the laws of New Caledonia, as the presence of criminals prevented emigrants from proceeding there

Alsace-Lorraine is demanding to be included among the German States, and its delegates in Berlin assert that its protests against German rule are at an end, and the people desire peace, and are willing to co-operate with the other States for the advancement of the Empire. Alarming news has reached the Berlin press of the state of affairs in the German territory in Africa. The Gomalis are said to be in conflict with the German East African Company. During the recent interview the Czarewitch assured General Yon Caprivi that there was no alliance in existence between France and Russia.

It is said that the reports made by the Czarewitch on his return from the German capital have satisfied the Czar, who previously suspected that General Yon Caprivi was intriguing with the Poles.

It has transpired that the Bank of Florae spent £BO,OOO in bribing the members of the Chamber of Deputies in order to obtain an extension of the privileges of the institution. It is alleged that the Marquis Rudini and Signor Crispi are involved in the frauds. Feb. 7.

Baron Lozzaroni, who has been arrested on a charge of being concerned in the Bank of Rome frauds, is indebted to the institution to the amount of 12,000,000 lire.
