ASHBURTON WOOL SALES. Ashbubton, January 23. At the wool sales 1200 bales were offered. For crossbred, prices were equal to the December sale ; merino was slightly lower than at the December sales. Including both sales, 3200 bales were offered, and only one clip unsold, so that this was the most successful season of local sales.

MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL

London, January 22. Tallow, medium mutton, 29s ; beef, 28s. The maize moth is causing destruction amongst the maize crops.

Four hundred thousand spurious shillings have arrived in England from Germany. Wheat has fallen 6d per quarter. 9500 quarters to arrive in February and March have been sold at 325.
