FITZROY SURPRISE PARTY.
The above company opened for or. night in Geraldine on Tuesday, and wei greeted with a fairly good attendance The company is by no means strong numerically speaking, but still put o the " boards " a very good show. Th chief part of entertaining the audienc fell to the lot of Miss Ada Fitzroy, an this she did in a very charming mannei First she gave some remarkable feats c memory. Six slates were handed roun amongst the audience, and on each slat was written five names of an object c thing, animate or inanimate, making i all 30 words. These words were caile over to Miss Fitzroy by the. writers, an after that she could give them off froi No. 1 to 30 and backwards. If anyon in the audience called out a number sh could immediately give the correspondin word or vice versa. Besides feats c memory Miss Fitzroy proved herself t be a clever exponent of the Davenporl spirit and mystical manifestations. Tw gentlemen in the audience roped he arms tightly behind her back, and the fastened her to a chair so that not on would dream that she could move. She wa then confined in the mysterious cabine and presently bells were heard ringin and tambourines beating within, and the half a dozen tambourines came shootin over the screen. After this a low gentleman from the audience, who ha the courage to go forward, was placed o a chair beside her in the cabinet, an soon from the unearthly tomb-like yell he made it was known that he wa " getting it pretty rough," and in a fei minutes his best " Sunday-go-meetin' : coat came over the screen without it owner in it. When the screen wa drawn aside he was found siLting • blind folded and in his shirt sleeves beside th mysterious lady, who was still bouni as before. Again a very cleve: and amusing performance by this entertainer is given in Silhouettes or making shadow representations o and characters with her hands, oi a screen. TJ IB dog swallowing a bone the cat, the fox chasing the hare, th< cardinal addressing from his pulpit, and i host of other jthiiH's, were represented ir a most life-J.ik.o In'annw, jVJW Ruty Clifford was well received in her step auc sand Awwa, ?W d Mr Dave Gardner—an old favQFijtg—-yas yrarmiy received, al though most of his jolces v/erg tl\Q gam« as exploder! by him here on his formej visit. W Q would suggest that a new sel of jokes would tuno I2 ~fik better than the old ones if the company again visits iiiis district, The entertainment closed with the laughable farce called {< Rumpus," in which Mr Dave Gardner played a prominent part. The other parts were taken by Mr Ashton and Miss Clifford. Professor Clarke showed himself to be a clever pianist, and at the conclusion of the entertainment put himself at the disposal of the young people, and a step or two was indulged in by them. Last evening the company gave a similar entertainment in the Volunteer Hall, Teniuka, the audience being a fairly large one, considering the jfcfme. of the year. The programme* was gone through in a spirited manner, and judging W the applause the audience were well pleased with what they saw and heard. To-day the company leave for Timaru, where they appear for two nights.
