DUNEDIN CHAMPIONSHIP CYCLING MEETING.
The cycling championship meeting started at Dunedin on Friday on the Carisbrook gi-oh? Tlie weather was beautiful, but a stiff b blowing oft tlie bay made cycling on one stretch oi the ground hard work. The atteiu.aiice was fair. The following are the results : Two Mile Roadster—R. Crow (250yds) 1; T. Maw (150yds) 2 ; F. Truman (scr) 3. Time—Groin 3 2/oth sec. Three Mile Championship—W. L. Kerr, Sydney, and W. J. S. Hayward, Christchurch, dead heat; E. Reynolds, Auckland, and W. Thompson, Christchurch, dead heat for third. Stedman also started. A splendid finish between Kerr and Hayward who were three parts of a lap ahead of the other pair. The judges were unable to separate them. Time—Bmin 35 l-sth sec., beating the existing record by 2 2-sth sec. Three Mile Open—R. Crow (450yds) 1; T. H. North (100yds) 2 ; T. Maw (450yds) 3. Won by 40 yards in Bmin 44sec. Five Mile Championship—W. J. S. Hayward (Christchurch) 1 : W. L. Kerr (Sydney) 2 ; E. Reynolds (Auckland) 3. Stedman also started, but gave up early, and Reynolds fell 100 yards from the post when spurting with every prospect of winning. Time—lsmin 35 2/sth sec. Five Mile Open—T. H. North (150yds) 1; H. Thompson (scr) 2; T. McKenzie (100yds) 3. Three others started; won easily. Time—lGmin 8 3/sth sec. Ten Mile Championship—Hayward 1; Kerr 2; Reynolds 3. Only the trio started. Kerr fell, but the others waited till he remounted a new machine. The pace was a cracker. Hayward won by less than a length, Kerr just beating Reynolds, Time—33min Xlisec.
On Saturday about 3000 atttended. The results were : One Mile Roadster Handicap—Crow, Dunedin, 1 ; Truman, Timaru, 2 ; Morgan, 3; time—3min. Half Mile Championship—Hayward, Christchurch, 1; Reynolds, Auckland, 2 ; Kerr, Sydney, 3; H. Thompson, Christchurch, also competed. Won by two yards ; time—l min 22sec. Two Mile Open Handicap—H. Thompson, Pioneer (scr) 1; J. Whelan, Timaru (scr) 2 ; R. Crow, Dunedin (100yds) 3. A fine race ; won by a foot; time—6min lOsec. One Mile Championship—Hayward, 1; Reynolds, 2; Kerr, 3. Won by a length in the slow time of 3min 33 l/sth sec. Three Mile Handicap—J. Whelan (50yds), 1; H. Thomson (scr), 2 ; T. H. North (scr), 3. Three others started. A good race, won by three lengths ; time—9min 24Jsec. Twenty-five Mile Championship—Hayward (Christchurch), 1 ; Reynolds, (Auckland), 2 ; Steadman (Dunedin), 3. Kerr (Sydney) and North (Christchurch) also competed. North made the pace for four miles and retired. The first ten miles were covered in 32min, which is better time than for the championship yesterday. Half the distance was covered in 40min 20 r} sec, and when the hour had elapsed 18 miles 670 yards had been covered, while 20miles occupied 65min 15sec. The men led alternately throughout, entering on the last lap Stedman shot to the front amid cheers, closely followed by Hayward, and a great struggle between the two ensued. At 150 yards from home Hayward was on terms with Stedman, but Reynolds then came with a great spurt, and a desperate race down the straight resulted in Hayward winning by a good length, with Stedman less than a length away third; Kerr easing up 50 yards away. Time—lhr 22min 50sec.
