INSPECTOR PENDER.

The following excellent poetic eftusion appeared in the Christchurch Press of last Saturday. It is alleged to have been written by an old offender : PEPER PENDER’S PARTING. Tho’ you’re going to leave us, Peter, At the dawnin’ o’ the year, An’ we’re ’hardly like to meet a Cove wat’s downier on the queer; Tho’ a blood ’ound ’aint beside yer, Not at trackin’ crooked game, Still yer ’eart beats warm inside yer, Honest Peter, all the same. So ’ere’s to yer, Mr Pender, with your silver - ’eaded stick, An’ we’ll always think about yer when we’re out upon the nick ; Tho’ yo’ve hustled us like billyo, an’ busted many a spree. Still yer ’eart was soft for sufferin’, so ’ere’s to yer, Peter P.

Tho’ your scent’s as keen as ever, An’ you ’unts us just for sport, An’ you prosecutes so clever When you gets us in the Court ,• Tho’ you ’ates for us to slip yer (Which is seldom that we can, For its mighty ’hard to trip yer). Still you fights us like a man. So ’ere’s to yer, Mr Pender, with yer medals on yer breast; Tho’ I’m bound to say you do enjoy a-jumpin on our cheat, Still you 'are to do yer duty, an’ you does it fair an’ free, Without a d n for no one, so ’ere’s to yer, Peter P.

Was it dunder-’eaded Dickey, Or ironic Mr Reeves — All so caustic an’ so trickey — Wot worked out these ’ere relieves 1 No doubt they’re clever, bar a Thing the public wants to know, An’ that’s why they made Kumara An exception to the Show ? ■ Still ’ere’s to yer, Mr Pender, with your military air, For, whatever games the Gov’ment does, you're always on the square. So ’ere’s to yer, Mr Pender, for, wherever you may be. You’re a capable Hinspector, tender-’earted Peter P.

Then ’ere’s good-bye, Mr Pender, With our ’and upon our ’eart, An’ there's many an old offender Will be griefy when we part. Good ole British oak 1 they’ve tore yer From yer roots ; but, never mind, For whatever lies before yer, Peter P., you’ve friends behind. So ’ere’s to yer, Mr Pender, at this festive time o’ year, An’, wherever they may send yer, ’ere’s the best of all good cheer. Tho’ you generally jugged us when we tried our hanky panks, Still you ’elped the kids and missis, Peter P. an’ ’ere’s our thanks.
