KANAKA LABOR.
London, Dec. 28.
The first of the letters written by Miss Shaw, travelling representative of the London Times in Australia, is devoted to Queensland. Referring to the Kanaka labor traffic she states that after most careful enquiry she finds there is absolutely no foundation for abuses which are reported to exist in the custom of recruiting and retaining the Kanakas, and she, considers that the present mode of recruiting is above the shadow of reproach and declares she never saw an average European manual labourer so well cared for as the Kanakas are on the plantations. In Queensland the sugar industry oilers a valuable field for English capital and labor. Commenting on the letter editorially, the Times says that if public opinion in England is overruled by opinion prevailing in the colony it might be doing greater unkinduess to the Kanakas than the employers; there seems ground for hoping that duly supervised the traffic will be advantageous to all concerned.
