CRICKET.
GERALDINE Ist V. ASHBURTON Ist
The only holiday attraction at Geral" dine on Tuesday was the cricket match between the above teams. This drew a good many people to the Domain, and a great deal of local interest was manifested in the match. The match itself was rather a “ soft ” one, the Geraldine men having things all their own way. The pitch was in excellent condition, but the wind blowing across the ground was rather unfavourable for both bowler and batsman. Tuesdays match makes another big win for Geraldine, and adds again to their unbroken record of this season. The Geraldine teams, Ist and 2nd, have played this year, and in the majority of instances the wins were more than ordinary. It speaks well for the local skill, when it is considered that the revival of cricket after a lapse of several years at Geraldine has shown that the old hands as well as the young ones have lost none of their “ cunning.” On Tuesday Jeraldine won the toss, and decided to send their opponents to the wicket. G. Andrews, G. Cromie opened for Ashburton, and made a fair stand against the bowling of Pearpoint and Fish, Andrews now and again “ sneaking” a run off Fish’s bowling. Pearpoint’s bowling was excellent, although he only took two wickets in the first innings. For the' first eight overs he had only three runs made oft’ his bowling, and during those overs he took two wickets, and had five maiden overs recorded against him. It was not till Raymond came on the scene that any runs could be got off Pearpoint. The Timaru man who took the place of an Ashburton man that was absent played a good bat, and was not out for 15. Fish did not take a wicket till his sixth over, and then he changed wonderfully, and finished with six wickets to his credit for 25 runs. Hill and Smith led off Geraldine’s first innings, but before Hill could break his “ duck ” Buchanan had his bails down with a clean bowl. H. W. Moore took Hills’ place, and by lunch time the score had reached 35. An adjournment was then made for the Crown Hotel, where a good lunch was supplied for the men. After lunch the game was continued. Smith was caught by Andrews for 28, and Moore was caught by Raymond for 29. Fish played a careful game for 24. The second innings of Ashburton was very “ tfme,” Pearpoint took six wickets for seven runs, and Fish 4 wickets for 12 runs. The following are the scores: — Geraldine—First Innings. TEMUKA 2nd V. OAMARU 2nd. This match was played in Victoria Park on Tuesday morning. The Oamaru team was a strong one, their bowlers being very good, and their batsmen steady and correct players. Five of the Temuka men did not turn up, and substitutes were picked up on the ground. Oamaru scored 126 in their innings, of which Maude made 15, Meek 18, Ferens 11, King (not out) 27, McGhie 15, and there were 18 extras. Temuka made 71, Mendelson having 22 to his credit, W. Uru 17, McLean 16, none of the others reaching double figures. Mendelson took most of the Oamaru wickets, and Ogilvio most of the Temuka. Ogilvie was well seconded by McGhie. TEMUKA IST V ASHBURTOX Ist. This match came off at Temuka yesterday, and resulted in a win for Ashburton by seven wickets. The Temuka team was the first to bat. Hone of the men could do anything against the good bowling of Todd and Buchanan, the innings closing for the low score of 41. Ashburton made a very bad start, Hayhurst and Dignau being well on the spot, four wickets having fallen for three runs at the luncheon adjournment. On resuming two more batsmen were quickly out, the score standing at 12 runs, when Buchanan came in, and being well aided by Cromie, he brought it up to 71 before he was caught. The other men brought the total up to 83. Temuka did a little better in their second innings, reaching 68, leaving Ashburton with 27 runs to win, which were knocked up with the loss of three wickets.
