THE CHEVIOT ESTATE.
The Wellington correspondent of the Lyttelton Times" wired on Thursday I understand that the Government has to-day in cabinet decided to accept the offer of tho owners of the Cheviot estate. It will, therefore, take the property by purchase under the provisions of the Land and Income Tax Act. The matter arose in this way :—There was a difference of opinion about the value between the owners and the Land Tax Department, and the Government assessor’s value was upheld by the Board of Reviewers. In consequence the owners offered the Government the property at their (tho owners’) valuation. This occurred some time ago. The Government thereupon got two separate valuations made by independent valuers. The result is today the cabinet’s decision to take the property at the offer made by the owners. All that remains is for both parties to comes to the necessary agreement as to tho preliminaries about possession, payment of the money, and so forth. This is the first instance of the “kind that has occurred in the colony. The Government, I may add, has given the matter the fullest consideration, being fully aware of the grave responsibility involved in the decision ’
[At the meeting of the meeting of the meeting of the Board of Reviewers for the counties of Amuri and Cheviot, held on June 15, the trustees of the late Hon. W, Robinson objected to the valuation of of Cheviot Estate. The total valuation of the estate, which comprises an area of 85,603 acres was £303,183, the improvements being assessed at £45,983. The Government allowed an increase in the improvements to £48,313. The objectors fixed the total valnation at £260,220. After hearing jvqiumber of witnesses, the Board reserved its decision till the following day, when it announced that it could not see it's way to alter the total valuation of the estate, but that it would increase the value of improvements from £45,983 to £54,300, thereby reducing the unimproved value from £257,200, to £248,883.]
