AN EPISTOLARY CURIOSITY.
The following is a literal transcription of a letter received by a gentleman now in Invercargill, but recently in Victoria. He advertised for a housekeeper, but the applicant evidently read the notice as from a housekeeper wanting a situation and oilers the supposed lady a permanent one. “ Ararat, Dec. 31,1891. Ardwick, Deer Maddam seeing in todays age you are in want of a Housekeepers for a few week or a good place home I may tell you that I am a Widdower, and am in want of a person to take charge of my house but not a Housekeeper but I will marry her at once as soon as you come here my age is 40 coming birthday I have a comfortable 3 roomed House all furnished my own Private Property and with it a good garden in full bearing all I will give to a clean sober stout person as I a English man and member of the Wislean church here so if my terms suit you maddam you can come up here and become Mrs and Mistress of my home and property will be your own as long as we live in this world together Maddam so Hoping and wishing a Happy new year I beg to remain yours Mr your answer Waiting for by return of Post.”
